Why Did You Decide To Do a Big Lap?

Monique and Ryan from @endlessadventureseekers

Monique & Ryan: Well, why not?

Monique: So we both enjoy camping and doing the outdoors. I’ve particularly always wanted to do the lap because while we’re fit and young enough and still able to see all the beautiful surroundings.Monique & Ryan from @endlessadventureseekers

Lyss and Isaac from @thesaltycircus_

Isaac: Well, we’ve lived in Oz, our whole lives pretty much and we realize we’ve done more travelling abroad than we have in our backyards. So, with all the overseas travel restrictions, we thought, why not get out and explore our own country?

Paula and Mathilde from @backpack_withus

I think, even in France we had the idea in mind to do the big lap of Australia. The only thing was that we didn’t know where to start, or which direction to take. We figured out everything bits by bits here, that the best way to do it was simply to follow the seasons and look for a job for the peak time of the tourism season, especially in hospitality. Months after months we started to fall in love with the country, the landscapes, and the wildlife and we just kept going further! We started in Perth and our first road trip took us up to Carnarvon, WA. You can easily imagine how France is different from OZ and everything on that road amazed us! The long-distance driving, our first kangaroo, the immensity and emptiness of the outback, the extreme weather, the kindness of the Aussie, the lifestyle, the freedom, everything! Once you get a taste of that, it’s quite difficult to stop!

We decided to do the big lap just for randomness, to be honest, it was just a spur of the moment thing that we thought of. We had a unique work situation that popped up and we thought let’s take advantage and travel around Australia.

Misty, Simon and the kids from @ourorganisedtribe

Simon: Seems like a good time to do it.

Misty: Yeah. And we were travelling in South Australia over the summer and it had been lockdowns and everything, and we decided to just go and do it.

Travis and Emma from @adderley.adventures

Emma: Why did you decide to do a big lap? It really came from lockdown.

Travis: Two.

Emma: Lockdown number two in 2020. We had a Bali holiday that was cancelled. And so we started looking around at places that we could go within Australia and then we started going, oh, that place is nice. And that place is nice. And so how can we see it all kind of thing. And then we really got sick of just feeling like, we just weren’t living our lives. And so we decided. And that’s when really push come to shove and we decided to have a crack at living on the road full time.

Travis: We’d been watching a lot of families on YouTube and Instagram and started to get the bug. And then we just went too far down the rabbit hole and we were like, we have to give it a crack. So sold everything. Got a little bit of stuff at the mother-in-law back in Vic, but sold everything. We’re going to move around for the rest of this year and then settle down somewhere at the end of the year and set up for another lap in a couple of years I reckon.

Chris and Holly from @knot2shore_adventures

We always dreamed about doing a big lap around Australia. It’s currently one of those things that we always said we will do when we retired, but when Covid hit, we couldn’t go on holiday. We were saving money so we just decided that we would…

Instead of buying a house, we’d do this.

Yeah. So we just hit the road, and haven’t looked back. I don’t think we’ll stop anytime soon.

Definitely not.

It’s definitely a good time.

Jesse and Cheyanne from @cruisingaust

Cheyanne: We literally used to go away every single weekend for a couple of years, and then one weekend literally just said, let’s travel Australia!

Jesse: So just packed up we saved for a good year before we did it, and then we just took off and went for it.

Matt, Tanikka and their kids from

Matt: We decided “let’s travel Australia.”

Tanikka: Yeah, that’s what happened, and then we did

Matt: Didn’t really believe it, wake up in the morn to someone researching caravans and then a month later

Tanikka: We had a caravan
