How a Caravan Air Conditioner Works
A caravan air conditioner is a shrunken, ruggedised version of the split system on your house wall. A compressor pumps refrigerant around a sealed loop. On one side the refrigerant absorbs heat from the air inside the van, on the other it dumps that heat outside. Run the loop one way and you get cooling; a reverse cycle unit simply runs it the other way to heat. As a bonus, the cooling process pulls moisture out of the air, which is why a van feels so much more bearable with one running in the humidity up north.
That reverse cycle heating is worth knowing about, because on a cool morning your air conditioner is often the most efficient heater you own, right up until it gets properly cold (below about 5 degrees ambient), where a diesel heater takes over. So the same box on your roof is doing double duty across the seasons.
Rooftop vs Under Bunk
Almost every caravan air conditioner is one of two types, and it helps to know which you have. A rooftop unit sits on the roof and blows cool air down through a central ceiling outlet. Because cold air sinks, that is a naturally efficient place to put it, and it keeps the weight and noise up and out of your living space. The trade off is 30 to 44 kilos sitting high, which lifts your centre of gravity.
An under bunk unit hides inside, usually under a bed or bench, and pushes air through ducting. It sits low and central, which is kinder to towing, and it runs quieter in the bedroom, at the cost of a chunk of storage. Neither is better in the abstract; they just suit different vans. What matters for using yours is knowing where the air comes in and goes out, so you can keep those paths clear.
How To Use It Well
Getting the best from an air conditioner is a genuine skill, and it is mostly about working with it rather than against it.
Cool early, not late. A van that has been closed up and baking all day is a heat-soaked oven, and asking the unit to rescue it at 3pm is the hardest possible job. Get the air conditioner going before the van turns into a furnace and let it maintain a comfortable temperature rather than claw one back.
Shut the van up and shade it. An air conditioner fighting sun pouring through big windows and doors left open is wasting most of its output. Drop the blinds on the sunny side, shut the doors and windows, and let it recirculate cool air instead of cooling the whole campsite.
Understand inverter versus fixed speed. If your unit is an inverter model it varies its compressor speed, so it starts softly and then settles to a low, steady hum holding the temperature. A fixed speed unit slams on at full noise, cools past the target, switches off, and repeats. Knowing which you have explains the noise and the power behaviour, and on an inverter unit you can often set a sensible temperature and leave it rather than chasing the thermostat.
Run the air conditioner alongside your fans, not instead of them. A ceiling or 12V fan moving the cooled air around means you feel comfortable at a higher thermostat setting, which cuts the run time and the power bill.
The Power Reality
There is no getting around it: an air conditioner is a heavy electrical load, and it shapes when and where you can run one. On a powered site it runs off the post, though on a 10 amp outlet it takes up most of the available power, so running the kettle, the microwave or the hot water element at the same time will often trip the breaker.
Off grid is the hard part. Running an air conditioner from batteries is possible but demanding: realistically an inverter unit with a soft start, a large lithium bank and a serious inverter, and even then you are buying a few hours of afternoon relief rather than round-the-clock cooling. For most big lappers the honest approach is to treat the air conditioner as a powered-site comfort and lean on fans, ventilation and shade when you are free camping. Keeping It Healthy
An air conditioner asks for very little, but the little it asks for matters, and skipping it is how units die early or lose their cooling. The basics are cleaning the return air filter regularly so airflow stays strong, keeping the external condenser clear of dust and leaves, and checking the roof seal once a year so water never finds its way in. If the van sits unused for a while, give the unit a short run every month to keep the compressor and seals in good order.
