• Basic Road Info: The Great Southern Touring Route is a loop track starting and ending in Melbourne. It’s 864km long and fully sealed, except for some optional detours. Most of the road has up to 100km/h limit but beware of wildlife crossing.
• Best Travel Time: The summer season is the best and most popular time to do the route, so you can expect some crowds. If you want to avoid them, opt for the wintertime, when you can spot some whales and waterfalls start to fill up. Even though nature is awakening in spring, you can’t predict the amount of rainfall, and you might end up with a not-so-pleasant road trip.
• Estimated Travel Time: Compared to other road trips, the Great Southern Touring Route is short, and the fact that it takes you exclusively through sealed roads cuts the travel time. You can do it in approximately 6 days, but you might rush and miss some of the charming towns. Allow at least 8 to 10 days.
• What To Bring: This route moves through populated places, so even in a case of emergency, you won’t be stranded on the way. However, fill up your tank in the bigger cities for cheaper prices and bring essential road emergency equipment. Hiking boots are a must, as well as a surfboard if you’re into surfing.

Melbourne to Torquay

Start your journey by getting on Highway One from Melbourne and drive 75km down the coastline. Your first stop is Geelong. Go for a stroll through the Geelong Botanical Gardens and visit the National Wool Museum. Learn about sheep farming and shearing, and get up close to the machines used for carpet weaving and knitting socks. It’s the place where history, science and fashion come together. Geelong Gaol is another captivating piece of history, a former prison operating until 1991.

Enjoy lunch by the beach and travel 22km further to Torquay, the surf capital of the world. Visit the Australian National Surfing Museum, a fascinating place even for those who don’t surf. Take a walk up to the lookout of Bells Beach and enjoy watching the pros conquering the waves.

Torquay to Apollo Bay

Leave Torquay and drive merely 20km to Anglesea, a charming small coastal town. Start your day by a walk through the Point Addis Marine National Park. Enjoy some stunning views from the platforms before continuing your journey to the Loveridge Lookout. For kangaroo sighting, stop at Anglesea Golf Club and catch them relaxing under the trees.

Grab a treat at the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery and continue your drive to Lorne. Pick some mesmerizing falls to visit in the area; the Erskine Falls, Lower and Upper Kalimna Falls, Phantom or Henderson Falls. Each one has a unique appeal, and the hikes vary in difficulty.
Get back on the road, and in 55km, you’ll reach Apollo Bay, the gateway to the Great Otway National Park.

Apollo Bay & Great Otway National Park

Start your day with a hike to the Cape Otway Lightstation for some magnificent views and a history lesson. The Old Cable Station Museum is another essential piece of history, as it was once the only connection between Tasmania and Australia.

Your following stop is the Great Otway National Park, the real treasure of the area. Plan at least a day to dive into its lush greenery, scenic waterfalls and red forest. Traverse the stunning Australian south woods and meet some wallabies along the way. Hopetoun and Beauchamp Falls are a must-visit. There’s free camping in the park as well as walking platforms. For a different view of the forest, visit the Otway Fly Treetop Adventures and take the 600-metre long, 47 metres high treetop walk or the zip line tour.

Finally, hit the Wreck Beach at low tide, to spot some significant remnants of a shipwreck. Beware, you’ll need to climb and descend over 300 stairs and some slippery rocks!

Apollo Bay To Warrnambool

Just 85km further from Apollo Bay, you’ll reach one of the route’s highlights, the Twelve Apostles. Ensure to visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds as well as to enjoy the majestic limestone stacks in peace. Due to the natural process of erosion, there are only seven left, therefore the next time you get the chance to visit them, there might be even fewer left. There’s an info centre on-site as well as parking and an underground pathway to the coast. Continue to Loch Ard Gorge, a stunning scenery named after the shipwrecked clipper. London Bridge is another spectacular lookout as well as the Bay of Islands – a site giving out the Twelve Apostles feeling but relatively smaller and less crowded.

Ensure to reach Warrnambool in time for the sound and light show at the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village.

Warrnambool To Dunkeld

Before heading out north, stop at Port Fairy, the small charming town with picturesque scenery. Take a walk to Griffiths Island and visit the lighthouse along the edge. Captain John Griffiths, was the first one to bring white settlers from Tasmania to Portland Bay, as a result, the island was named after him. There are plenty of wallabies around and a lovely beach walking area.

Leave Port Fairy and drive an hour to Dunkeld, where some fantastic hikes await. Dunkeld is located on the southern tip of the Grampians National Park. Visit the Dunkel Arboretum, a botanical paradise filled with ancient red gum trees and kangaroos. Depending on your fitness level, you can take the Grampians Peaks Trail and stop by the must-see locations as Boroka Lookout, Reeds Lookout, The Balconies and Mackenzie Falls.
In fact, if you’re up for a bigger challenge, take the 3.5km loop track to the Chimney Pots – cliff formations in the remote side of the Grampians Park.

Dunkeld To Halls Gap

This is the section for 4WD lovers; the Grampians Park and Halls Gap provide some interesting 4WD tracks. Brambuk, The National Park & Cultural Centre, is an award-winning visitors centre with a wonderful representation of the Aboriginal culture, history and rock art sites. Take the Pinnacle walk, a medium difficulty 4.3km loop taking you to the top where you can enjoy a nice picnic. After that, you can take the descend to the Venus Baths for a refreshing swim.

The Halls Zoo is one of the area’s highlights, especially if you’re travelling with kids. It features over 160 different animals, like giraffes, cheetahs, monkeys, crocodiles, kangaroos and koalas. The walk along the zoo is 2.5km long and wheelchair friendly. You’ll find a kiosk for food, toilets, a playground and free BBQ areas.

Halls Gap To Ballarat

Get back on the road for a longer drive, 145km to Ballarat, the centre of the Victorian architectural heritage. Your first stop is Sovereign Hill, a living outdoor museum showcasing life in Australia in the 1850s goldrush era. It’s both fun and educational; it provides horse carriage rides and hands-on activities for visitors of all ages. Further, visit the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, where you can relax by Lake Wendouree.

For a different close encounter with wildlife, visit the Ballarat Wildlife Park. You’ll find over 100 free-roaming kangaroos, koalas, wombats, little penguins, dingoes, Tasmanian devils, snakes, tortoises, emus, Sumatran tigers, and so much more. This park is home to Crunch – the 5-metre long crocodile. You get the unique opportunity to cuddle a koala or a wombat, hand feed a kangaroo or get a snake wrapped over your shoulders.

Ballarat To Melbourne

Heading out of Ballarat, there’s an optional but very recommended 45km detour you can take to Daylesford. The region is home to the Passing Clouds Winery, Lake Daylesford and Spa Country. It features tons of weekend getaway properties, farms and mineral springs. Are you feeling tired already? Treat yourself to a spa day and a wellness treatment at some of the many resorts.

For a different kind of experience, take the Daylesford Spa Country Train, a volunteer-run tourist railway, taking you into the wombat forest.

Back on the road to Melbourne, stop for magnificent views over the city at Mount Macedon or a glass of wine at Gisborne Peak Winery.

And you’re done! The Great Southern Touring Route ends where you started, in Melbourne. Where will the road take you next?

Panton Hill is a family-owned and run boutique winery in European style, with authentic charm. The building style and rural atmosphere give you the feeling you’re somewhere in Tuscany or Provence, but it’s merely 45minutes from Melbourne! There’s no tasting fee, the prices of wines and food are very reasonable. If you happen to visit on Sunday, know it’s BYO picnic day – you can purchase wine on-site, but you have to bring your own lunch.

4. Helen & Joey Estate, Gruyere

Helen & Joey Estate is a family-run winery settled on a picturesque property overviewing Yarra Valley. The expansive elevated deck is the perfect setting for trying their boutique wines while taking in the views. You probably won’t expect unicorn statues at a winery, but they sure will make you giggle. Enjoy a glass of their renowned Shiraz or Rose!

5. Campbells Wines, Rutherglen

Situated in the historic Rutherglen region, Campbells Wines is a boutique winery with over 145 years of experience in producing the best wines in Australia. This family-run winery does a great job preserving the fruit taste in their wines, authentic for this region. The expansive wine tasting selection is free. The Muscats and Topaques of Rutherglen are the two wines you can’t afford to miss!

6. Michelini Wines, Myrtleford

Michelini Wines is a Tuscan style winery run by Italian immigrants with a rich heritage. The wines follow the architecture; you can taste Sangiovese, Teroldego, Barbera and a limited edition Fangolino at the vine pergola. The tasting fee is $10, which is waived upon purchase.

The Caracatsanoudis established the Robinvale Organic Wines in 1976, almost 20 years after migrating from Greece to Australia. The winery is made of ancient limestone, designed to resemble a Greek temple. Today they keep on producing quality wines, vegan and vegetarian friendly, and non-alcoholic beverages. Try their non-alcoholic or fortified wines if you’re willing to experiment with flavours.

16. Maddens Rise, Coldstream

Maddens Rise has an artisan approach to winemaking, leading to variations in wine tastes each year. The wine is made on-site using hand-picked grapes, small-batch fermentation, minimal oak influence and wild yeasts. They adopted biological farming practices to preserve the natural vineyard environment. Their cellar door is dog friendly, clean, modern, and the service is terrific.

17. Zig Zag Rd Wines, Drummond North

The Zig Zag Road Winery was established just three years ago in 2018 by a young family that decided to leave their corporate jobs and dedicate their lives to winemaking. They grow riesling, pinot noir, cabernet, shiraz, pinot grigio and sauvignon blanc. Tasting at their cellar door is free for groups smaller than five people, and you’re welcome to BYO picnic any day!

18. Tahbilk Winery & Cellar Door, Tabilk

Tahblik means the place of many waterholes in the local Aboriginal dialect and accurately describes this winery’s location. It was established in 1860, and in 2013 it went carbon neutral. Do the Tabilk-Tabilk Wetlands Indigenous Flora Walking Trail, launched in March 2021, and drop by the cellar door. Enjoy the seasonal menu and their extensive list of red and white wines!

19. Ringer Reef Winery, Porepunkah

Ringer Reef vineyard was established in 1998, and today it’s a vibrant family-run vineyard, winery and cellar door. They grow and craft a diverse range of handmade Alpine Valley wines. The outdoor tasting experience comes at $10 and includes phenomenal views from the deck as well as excellent wines.

20. Pizzini Wines, Whitfield

Pizzini Wines is a family-owned winery in the King Valley, focusing on producing Italian wines as Pinot Grigio, Arneis, Prosecco, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. They planted the first vines in 1978 and made the first Pizzini wine in 1994. Take a tour and sit down for a unique tasting experience. A fair warning: the perfect mix of picturesque sites and adventure will have you longing to go back time after time!

Important Travel Tips

• Basic Road Info: The Great Ocean Road is a sealed, 243km long road with one lane in each direction and a speed limit ranging from 50km/h to 100km/h. It’s the largest war memorial, built by returned soldiers in 1932 and dedicated to those who gave their lives in World War I. As a major tourist attraction, it provides access to popular landmarks. In December last year, an act called “Great Ocean Road Environs Protection Act 2020” went into effect to legally protect the road.
• Best Travel Time: December to February is peak season, nature is in full bloom, and festivals are happening everywhere. But prepare for crowds and traffic jams. During winter, June to August precisely there are fewer crowds, it’s less expensive, and you can catch the whale migration. September to November, the weather is fine, waterfalls are flowing, nature is awakening. However, you can expect rainfall here and there.
• Estimated Travel Time: You can drive the Great Ocean Road in a day, but if you allow time to take in the scenic coastal views, visit the towns, wineries, and landmarks, it can take you anywhere between 3 days to a week. There’s so much to see!
• What To Bring: You’ll be driving on a sealed road, so a regular 2WD with a filled-up tank is all you need. Great Ocean Road passes by many towns where you can stock up on groceries, fuel, and other necessities. Bring your adventurous spirit and curiosity!

Takeoff, East to West – Torquay

If you’re starting from Melbourne, make sure to leave early. You’ll reach Torquay in 100km and then officially be on the Great Ocean Road or B100. Torquay is a surfers haven, full of surf shops and sublime beaches, including Bells Beach – the most popular one and host of the longest-running surfing contest in the world.

If you’re not keen on surfing, get back on the road to Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery for a sweet break. Stop for a moment at Loveridge or Eagle Rock Lookouts to take in some of the majestic coastal views.

Torquay To Lorne

Lorne is a friendly town filled with cafes, shops, and delicious local food. It’s a popular holiday destination for locals so plan your visit accordingly. Take a walk on the pristine beach, in the rainforest, or bike along the seashore. If you’re up for a challenge, pack a lunch and visit Cumberland Falls, just be aware the hike is 9km long.

For an easier detour from Great Ocean Road, leave your car, and do the 30-minute steep climb to Teddy’s Lookout right outside Lorne. You’ll be rewarded with two lookouts – Otway Ranges Lookout and St George River Lookout

Lorne To Apollo Bay

Wake up early and head to Apollo Bay. This is another popular stop along the road offering the best of both worlds – a commercial centre, museums, pristine beaches, and scenic backdrops.

Check out the Cape Otway Lightstation, where you can spot some wallabies, and the Old Cable Station Museum, which was the only connection between Tasmania and Australia in the past. The Bass Strait Shell Museum keeps some interesting marine life species.

Hit up some of the lookouts to enjoy a scenic sunset. Marriner Lookout is at the end of town on Marriners Lookout Road or Evans Lookout, a couple of kilometres inland from Skenes Creek.

Great Otway National Park

Prepare to get lost exploring the magnificent Otway National Park. Start the morning by walking in the Californian Redwoods forest, settled along the Aire River. These trees were planted in 1939 and now reach up to 60 metres in height!

Check out Hopetown Falls, just a short walk from the Redwoods. You can admire the falls from the platform or walk down to the base. If you like chasing waterfalls, go to Beauchamp Falls next. These 20-metre tall waterfalls rest beside the lush ferns and the mystic rainforest.

For the bold souls, there is Otway Fly Treetop Adventures. They provide a 600-metre long treetop walk at 47 metres height or a zip line tour over the Otway forest.

The Twelve Apostles

Less than an hour’s drive from Otway National Park will take you to our next stop – the Twelve Apostles. Best to be visited in the early morning to avoid the crowds and you might even get the place to yourself.

The magnificent limestone stacks rise 45 metres above the sea and are one of the most breathtaking sceneries imaginable. Today there are only eight left and even those standing will slowly vanish due to natural erosion. It’s best to stop by on a clear day, and don’t pass them by – next time you’re around there might be even less! Walk the boardwalks around the cliff tops and take in the view from different perspectives.

Drop back later in the day to catch the sun going down behind the apostles.

Port Campbell

Port Campbell is a colorful little town that holds a rich history. Nearby is the Loch Ard Gorge – the site where a terrible shipwreck happened in 1878. Only two passengers managed to reach the beach and survive the wreck. London Bridge is another epic landmark, a limestone stack formed by a gradual erosion process. Up until 1990, it created a whole double-span natural bridge.

The Arch is another natural rock formation in the shape of an arch with waves crashing below. The Grotto, a scenic hollowed put cave, is settled just outside Port Campbell. Just a short walk down the wooden stairs will take you to this fantastic photography location. It’s best to visit it at low tide and expect to get misted by the waves crashing into the rocks.

Enjoy the sunset at Port Campbell Jetty.

Most places along the Murray River will offer a Houseboat experience. Although not the cheapest thing to do, if you feel like treating yourself then a houseboat is the way to go. Cruise the Murray in style, while relaxing in a hot tub on your balcony taking in the beautiful scenery. It will be an experience you won’t forget.

2. Visit the Wineries

Enjoy some of the best family-owned wineries near Rutherglen. Enjoy sampling various wines, or grab a bottle and enjoy the wide open spaces and live entertainment provided at some of the wineries. With 19 wineries to choose from there is bound to be one you will like.

3. Go on a Paddle Steamer

Take a trip on one of the many paddle steamers along the Murray. Soak up the serenity of the Murray region for the day or spend a few nights drifting down the river on a paddle steamer cruise. Watch the boiler being stoked and listen out for the steam whistle as you take in the beautiful Murray landscape. There are even lunch, dinner and wine cruises that you can take to add something a little more special to this already awesome activity!

4. Hire a BBQ boat

One of the best things to do while visiting Yarrawonga. Hire a BBQ boat in the afternoon (4pm-8pm) and start your boat experience from Lake Mulwala and head towards the Murray in Bundalong. Fill the esky and enjoy the sunset while cooking dinner on the BBQ.

5. Canoe, SUP or Ski!

Spend the day behind the boat and wakeboarding, skiing or kneeboarding. If you are after a bit more of a thrill jump on a biscuit or a banana ride for a fun experience. There are a couple of companies in the area that will let you get a taste for the thrill-seeking action, even if you’ve never tried it before.

If you’re looking for something a little calmer, the Murray’s tranquil waters are perfect for SUPing, kayaking or canoeing. You can hire them at numerous places on the river if you don’t have your own.

Top Tip: Go windsurfing or hire a stand up paddle board at the Yacht Club in Yarrawonga.

6. Step Back in time

This area is rich with pioneer and Aboriginal history. Take a walk through the Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement and learn about this historical place. You will find the Murray Laser Spectacular, Jimmy Long’s Bakery, The Lolly Shop, Blacksmith, Old Print Shop or get an historical photo taken at the Photo Parlour.

Alternatively, take a walk through time and experience the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre. Here you will find Evan’s Bro Sawmill, Steam Display, Echuca Wharf, Rail Siding and Vans and the preserved remains of the PS Success.

7. Cast A Line

The Murray Region is an incredible place to fish. Lake Hume, Lake Mulwala and the Murray River itself are ripe with the famed Murray Cod, golden perch and rainbow trout. Swan Hill, Heywards Bridge near Albury/Wodonga and Broken Creek are popular fishing spots with the locals. Head to Barmah, Nathalia, Numurkah, Cobram Barooga, Yarrawonga or Bundalong for tackle and bait (and pick up a picnic too!).

With rolling hills, rocky outcrops, stunning scenery, breathtaking waterfalls and tracks for days, the best way to explore this region is to head up, up, up! There is so much to explore here that jumping on a tour to help you navigate it, isn’t a bad idea. And if you’re not much of a walker, you can still appreciate the area and get to some of the lookouts by car. Views at Reeds Lookout and The Balconies, Boroka Lookout and Mount William can all be accessed by car.

2. Get Arty!

This region is abundant with local art galleries, exhibitions and museums. Bendigo and Ballarat in particular are particularly rich with art-related attractions. Check out Castlemaine Art Museum, the Art Gallery of Ballarat and Bendigo Pottery.

The Bendigo Art Gallery features an outstanding exhibition program. When a major exhibition is in town, all of Bendigo gets involved – The 8m statue of Marilyn Monroe still at Rosiland Park is testament to that.

3. Visit Lesser-Known Towns

4. Gold Experiences

Unsurprisingly, this Goldfields region provides multiple opportunities to get up close and personal with gold mining. Check out the Bendigo Central Deborah Mine to see a large-scale production; wander through the 1800s gold mine at Carman’s Tunnel in Maldon, or visit the Garfield Wheel. Wherever you are, make sure to keep your eye out – locals and tourists are always on the lookout for the next ‘Welcome Stranger’, a gold nugget weighing in at 96kgs found in Moliagul.

The Golden Triangle is every gold fossickers delight. Hire gold detectors at the Gold Centre in Maryborough – though make sure to get your license online in advance. You can also try your luck gold panning in some of the creeks and rivers. A popular historic gold area camp is Waanyarra, located just near Dunolly, with lovely shade areas and toilets.

5. Take A Drive

Travel north from the Little Desert National Park to Big Desert National Park with its pink lake in the centre. This trip takes you along great tracks, with bush camping in the sand or along the Wimmera River, fishing and stargazing.

6. Get On The Water

It’s not just adventures on land that this region provides in droves, there are plenty of opportunities to get out on the water too. Lake Cairn Curren (30km from Castlemaine) or Lake Eppalock (55km from Bendigo) both have an abundance of fishing and water activities, toilets, barbeques and a natural sand edge where boats can easily pull up.

The Offshore Surf School in Inverloch offers both private and group lessons. They have over 13 years experience. But surfing is not all they teach. They also offer lessons in stand up paddle boarding and snorkelling.

You can even have foodie experiences on two wheels too. Pedal to Produce is a local tour company where you can hire a bike and get taken on a trip to experience farm-fresh produce as well as local wines. You can start your tour from Rutherglen, Milawa or Wandiligong. Tour and Taste is another local business that offers bike tours around the region.

2. Play in the snow

You don’t have to ski to enjoy the snow in the High Country. Why not hike around the plains in snow-shoes or ride the toboggan slopes with the kids? There are special snow play activities available at Falls Creek, tobogganing at Dinner Plain and snow-shoe trails at Hotham Heights.

3. Take a bike ride

This area offers so many opportunities for avid riders to get out into the hills and cycle some of the most epic roads and tracks this country has to offer. Whether you’re a mountain biker, road cyclist or recreational rider getting out on two wheels is a must in this area. Follow one of the easy, picturesque rail trails or take things up a notch with the 7 Peaks Challenge.

4. Check Out The Wineries

5. Check out the Breweries

Plan ahead though, many of these breweries require bookings and are closed for a few days a week.

6. Go back in time

If you love history, you’re going to enjoy a visit to Beechworth. It’s one of the most preserved gold-mining towns in Victoria. A walk down Camp and Ford streets will delight you with many historic buildings and shop fronts dating back to 1857. You can even pay a visit to a dark cell which housed Ned Kelly at one time.

7. Horse riding in the land of The Man From Snowy River

There are plenty of horse riding tours you can take no matter your riding experience. You can visit historic cattlemen’s huts on the Bogong High Plains or take a leisurely ride over Mt Stirling to Craig’s Hut where The Man From Snowy River was filmed.

8. Free Camping

This region is full of free camp spots along the many rivers that run through the mountains. This is ideal if you have a 4WD as many areas are not accessible by 2 wheel drive vehicles. Some areas are also best explored while there’s no snow on the ground.
