1. Mt Coot-tha

Let’s start off with Brisbane’s famous lookout spot, Mt Coot-tha. If you’re a morning person you’re going to want to visit for sunrise, it’s spectacular! Watch the city wake up from the spacious viewing platform. Afterwards, grab breakfast at The Summit Cafe and soak up the views all morning (or afternoon, or evening!) There’s multiple walking trails up the mountain or if you’d rather take it easy there’s a car park situated on the summit.

2. Brisbane Botanic Gardens

Combine your morning at Mt Coot-tha with a trip to the Botanic Gardens, situated at the foot of the mountain. Accessible all year, the subtropical gardens are a great, free, attraction. Featuring a Japanese Garden, Tropical Dome and a children’s playground.

3. Howard Smith Wharves

With its excellent location and eateries, the Howard Smith Wharves is booming in popularity. Located on the Brisbane River, beneath the Story Bridge, the views are star quality. There’s a bustling, community feel to the area, and you’re guaranteed an excellent Sunday session.

4. King Island

Walk on water at this unique location in Brisbane’s Redlands Coast. Start your day at Wellington Point and when the tide is low, walk along the sand bank to the small, inhabited island. Family friendly and dog friendly, it’s a popular walking spot at just 2km return. Best time to visit? Sunrise and sunset make for a special memory at this locally known location.

5. South Bank

No Brisbane list would be complete without a mention of South Bank. Boasting Australia’s only man-made, inner city beach, South Bank is quite rightly the talk of the town. Home to an array of restaurants, walking paths and picnic spots, it’s our top place to recommend for a family day out. Additionally, it’s also the art and cultural hub of Brisbane. There you’ll find, Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Museum and State Library of Queensland.

6. Eat Street

If you’re looking for a fun night out and you’re a foodie, look no further! Eat Street Northshore is a vibrant venue selling international street food and alcohol along with live music performances. Entry costs just $5, so go take a visit. Your taste buds will thank you, trust us. 

7. Daisy Hill Koala Sanctuary

Situated just a short drive out of Brisbane, the Daisy Hill Koala Sanctuary is a wonderful education centre. Rescuing and rehabilitating koalas, the mission of the sanctuary is to educate and inform visitors. Situated on a peaceful day use area, it makes for a perfect picnic spot. Spot wild wallabies as you walk along one of the many trails found in the area. Admission to the centre is free. 

8. New Farm Park

One of Brisbane’s oldest parks, you’ll find this place come alive on weekends with local families gathering for a picnic. At just a minutes’ drive from the CBD, it’s easily accessible and is the perfect place to relax in the city. Walk amongst the flower beds and enjoy the impressive vantage point of Brisbane CBD.

9. Paddington

Discover the quirky suburb of Paddington in Brisbane’s west. With panoramic views of the city, it’s become a much sought-after real estate hot spot. Along with its city skyline views, Paddington is home to incredible antique stores, unique recycled shops and a host of eco-friendly independent stores.

10. Brisbane Vegan Markets

Found in the suburb of West End, this marketplace is Brisbane’s first monthly wholly vegan market. Offering a wide range of vegan goodies and delicious treats, its growing popularity is no surprise. Running twice a month, make sure you plan an early visit. Crowds flock and line the street to sample some of Brisbane’s best plant-based dishes.

11. Citylink Cycleway

Brisbane is proud to boast an extensive cycleway throughout the city, making eco travel easier than ever. Cycle stations are prominent throughout the city so there’s no need to worry about providing your own bike. Spend a day exploring the city by pedal and if you’re thrifty you can do it for free! Hire a bike for less than 30 minutes and there’s no charge. Simply swap your bike at the next station and you’re good to go. 

12. Netherworld

Release your inner child at Netherworld and enjoy their numerous pinball machines, board games and arcade. Additionally, you can grab a drink and a bite to eat and make a meal out of it. Another great place for plant-based lovers, their menu is 100% vegan! Customers can choose to add meat and dairy if they wish.

13. Mt Gravatt

Another must-do is Mt Gravatt lookout. Giving Mt Coot-tha a run for its money, this lookout spot is pretty hard to beat. Famous with the locals, small crowds gather to watch the sunset after cycling, hiking or driving to its summit.

14. Jacaranda Trail

If you’re lucky enough to visit Brisbane in Jacaranda season (October/November) then you’re in for a treat. The city comes alive with colour as the purple flowers bloom. Though they are native to Brazil, they have become Brisbane’s iconic tree. Grab your camera and capture the city at its most beautiful. 

15. Kangaroo Point

Whether you want to kayak the Brisbane River or hike the Story Bridge, Kangaroo Point has it all. Home for the adventurous, there’s an array of activities to do within this famous suburb. If you’re wanting something a little more down to earth, then simply take a walk along the riverside, it’ll impress you just as much.

16. Rooftop Bars

Brisbane is home to many things and rooftop bars are one of them. Dotted around the city there’s multiple bars to choose from, some of which even contain pools. Live your best life and enjoy a cool down cocktail as you soak up the skyline views.

We arrived at the North-Western Australian town of Exmouth after being told not to miss this place. Geographically, it is located 1270 kilometres from Perth on the North West Cape and is the gateway to the Ningaloo Reef.

Where We Stayed in Exmouth

Initially, we checked into the Caravan Park in town. However, after a few days, we moved camp to the Yardie Homestead Caravan Park. This fantastic caravan park was formerly a working sheep station with the remnants of shearing sheds and shearer’s quarters. It is located 32 kilometres outside of the town of Exmouth and is accessible to the beach, Cape Range National Park and Ningaloo Reef.

The great thing about this caravan park was that it’s pet friendly. We were able to get dogsitters to look after our dog whilst we explored the National Park and took a couple of snorkelling trips out on a boat to the reef.

The Ningaloo Reef

We discovered that the Ningaloo Reef is pretty extensive. This World Heritage-listed reef begins at Amherst Point south of Coral Bay, extending 260 kilometres to Bundegi Reef near Exmouth. It reaches 20 kilometres seaward, encompassing a massive 5,000 square kilometres of the Indian Ocean with 500 species of tropical fish and 220 species of coral. Words cannot describe how incredible it is!

Additionally, the Ningaloo Reef is one of the world’s major breeding areas for sea turtles and the feeding ground for the giant whale sharks during the months between April and June. Is it any wonder that this area has gained a reputation as one of the earth’s last ocean paradises?

Swimming With The Whale Sharks

The experience of swimming with the mighty giants of the ocean, the whale sharks, is an experience that will always stand out in my mind. It was simply awe-inspiring!

There is a selection of cruise boat operators in both Coral Bay and Exmouth that host Whale Shark swimming adventures daily during the season. Our cruise of choice was Ningaloo Whale Sharks. We soon discovered this colourful boar stood out from the rest, because of its uniquely painted whale shark patterned boat.

We were picked up early in the morning by a minibus from our caravan park and driven out to the boat ramp where the cruise boat departed from. We boarded the boat and cruised out into the ocean beyond the shallow reef, where we were briefed about the adventure that was just about to unfold and fitted with wet suits.

Spotter planes circled overhead above the boat searching for whale sharks in the water. They are apparently easy to spot from above because they feed on the surface of the water. Once one was spotted it was full speed ahead to the location.

Initially, when we plunged into the water to swim with our first whale shark, I was very apprehensive and a little afraid. Upon seeing the massive creature swim towards me I panicked and started to swim away as far as I could, worrying about retaining the 3-metre proximity. Once we divided into two groups of five on either side of the beast, we swam serenely beside it and started noticing the majesty of its appearance and unique spotted pattern.

Facts About Whale Sharks

Every year from April through to July, following the mass spawning of coral, the whale sharks congregate in the Ningaloo Marine Park to feed on zooplankton. 

They are the world’s largest fish and can reach up to 18 metres in length fully grown. But more commonly, they are between 4 and 12 metres long at the Ningaloo Reef. A 12-metre whale shark may weigh as much as 11 tonnes with a large mouth more than a metre wide. Extraordinary!

Every whale shark has its own unique pattern of spots on its body. They are non-aggressive and pose no threat to humans, apart from the fact that their huge tails can sometimes injure a diver if they get too close.

Reflecting On The Experience

It was an incredible experience to swim alongside these majestic creatures and view a myriad of other marine life such as turtles, dolphins, Minky whales, sharks, manta rays and coral reef fish. 

It wasn’t only a day full of fun and adventure. But from an educational point of view, it provided a great insight into the marine life of the Ningaloo Marine Park and how scientists are integral to ongoing research and conservation of the area.

I felt privileged to swim with these magnificent giants and found it an exhilarating and truly memorable experience. Definitely, one to tell the grandkids about!

I can’t think of any other place that I have been to in this world that would compare to the natural beauty and biological diversity of the Ningaloo Reef. Its label as one of the last great ocean paradises resonated with me. I could not imagine a place more abundant with nature’s gifts. My advice to all would be to overcome your fear and just do it!

After getting ourselves some actually decent snorkelling gear we started slowly by taking the kids to local rock pools and beaches so they could get used to using the masks and seeing what it was all about. They have surfed for a little while now, so are normally pretty comfy in the ocean. Over the past few weeks, we have taken them on some guided snorkelling trips and to some little freshwater pools to experience some real snorkelling.

Before You Try Snorkelling…

My advice, before I recommend some tours and places, is to absolutely get your own gear and make sure it is decent. The cheap masks hurt after a while and they leak, two things you absolutely do not want happening while your kids are out floating around the ocean. Good fitting wetsuits are also pretty important to make sure they feel comfy and stay warm when the conditions aren’t warm enough. Be prepared for tantrums, seasickness, and fear when taking boat rides to snorkel. Our experience so far is only the east coast of Australia but we will be visiting all over so will definitely have more advice in the coming months.

Our Snorkelling Adventures – Places You Must Visit

Hook Island & Whitehaven Beach

Our first boat ride out was with Ocean Rafting! Ok, these guys are awesome and it is a lot of fun, but a warning, this is a thrill ride out to the reefs at Hook Island and Whitehaven Beach. There will be wave hopping, doughnuts, and racing involved! If your kids are not adventurous you may end up with tears, like we did, and of course attitude – depending on the age!

Even with the tears, our guides Kevin and Scotty, were brilliant and the ride out was great. These boats are nice and fast so no seasickness happens. We opted for the Northern Exposure tour which includes 2-3 snorkelling locations (depending on the weather), plus lunch at Whitehaven and then Hill Inlet, so it is a jam-packed day. They are fantastic at helping out with beginner snorkelers and even kids that decide to throw a tantrum right before jumping in (yes that happened to us). So, eventually, all kids were thrown in and all got to see some Nemo fishies amongst other awesome marine life. 

Whitsundays & Whitehaven Beach

Our second ride out was with Cruise Whitsundays, these guys are a huge catamaran and it’s more of a cruise of the islands and then a swim and snorkel, if you wish, off the beach. They do feed the fish at Whitehaven so you get a great show of some super cute fish in the clear and warm waters – no wetsuits required at Whitehaven. This boat ride is rough and many people on board were sick, so be prepared. A little tip, when the kids are unwell or scared, the staff will offer out a little turtle teddy. Yes, we ended up with three teddies!

Big Crystal Creek, Paluma

Our next adventure was actually free snorkelling at Big Crystal Creek in the Paluma National Park. This place only has a few fish but man it is an awesome adventure.

Green Island

Our third boat ride was with Big Cat Green Island. While this wasn’t my favourite snorkelling trip, it was great for the kids. Snorkelling straight off the beach with so many fish was a real highlight and they absolutely loved it… well, our youngest wouldn’t go in, but such is life. They also offer glass-bottom boats and a semi-submarine ride, which I highly recommend so the kids can see the fish in the water and know what is out there.

At the end of today, even with the tears and tantrums, we are still pumped for more snorkelling around this gorgeous country so the good definitely outweighed the bad. My top tour for kids would be Green Island, purely for the boat options and the off-beach snorkelling. But for overall fun, definitely Ocean Rafting. Their service and experience in the water was amazing and it was just an all-around fun day.

Our Recommendations for Snorkelling Gear

Snorkel mask recommendations… well, this one is tricky. We started with cheaper full-faced masks for the kids, which were a total nightmare and waste of money. We eventually opted for the Ninja Shark ones and I am so glad we did. But, and yes there is a but, make sure you have backup masks as well. If your kids are anything like ours, they change their minds like the wind. Ours loved their full-faced masks in Victoria and then decided that in Queensland, they couldn’t use them properly (actually, they were ok for one day and then not). Feel my frustration?!

So, test out masks, if you can, but still have backup options. The full-face masks are great as they don’t need to be able to hold the bite in the snorkel and they can breathe normally, but they are a little tricky to put on and take off when needed. So we have both full-faced and two-piece masks just to avoid any stubborn moments. Wetsuits – make sure to get ones that fit correctly so they are comfy and keep them warm when needed (ones that are too big or too small just don’t work).

All in all, we are loving our snorkelling adventures and the kids have something amazing to write about in their journals each night. Another bonus, it really tires them out and they sleep so well after a day snorkelling!

1. Dalhousie Springs, South Australia

Dalhousie Springs is settled in the Witjira National Park and represents a group of 60 artesian springs. The springs are part of the Australian National Heritage List and part of Aboriginal life and tradition.
Dalhousie Springs is the true oasis in the Simpson Desert and often a starting point for exploring the area.

April to September is the best time to visit. Following heavy rainfall, the springs are surrounded by beautiful wildflowers. After you’ve soaked in the springs, visit the Dalhousie Ruins or admire some flora and fauna species specific to the region.

Water Temperature: 38°C to 43°C.

Entry Fee: $10 per vehicle.

2. Innot Hot Springs, Queensland

Innot Hot Springs is truly hot – with a temperature of up to 75°C in places, which then gets mixed with cold creek water. It’s settled in the Innot Village, in the Atherton Tablelands. You can enjoy these springs two ways- for free at Nettle Creek or visit the caravan park next door and use their hot pools to enjoy the spring water.

The hot water is ideal for the algae, so Nettle Creek appears green, not as inviting. After discovering the hot springs, people began piping the water to their baths and years later bottling it and selling it in Europe for its healing and rejuvenating features.

Water Temperature: 75°C.

3. Eulo Mud Baths, Queensland

The mud baths of Eulo are one of a kind rustic experience and an excellent way to treat yourself. You get your own tub to soak in the hot spring water infused with clay first, then pat on a mineral-rich mud pack to take in all the benefits. After the mud is dried, you get to soak in the spring water again. It’s one of the most relaxing bath experiences that comes with wine and nibbles next to a fireplace. Make sure to book ahead if you plan on visiting.

Water Temperature: N/A.

Entry Fee: $65 per person.

4. Tjuwaliyn (Douglas) Hot Springs Park, Northern Territory

The Tjuwaliyn (Douglas) Hot Springs is closed at the moment due to water supply issues. However, both the local government and the traditional owners are working on resolving the problem, so check before you make your way there.

Douglas Hot Springs is located on sacred land belonging to the Wagiman people. There are sacred sites around which you need to respect and stay away from, especially men. The springs tend to be very hot in sections, so be aware of this. The springs are incredible – located in one of the driest areas but surrounded by tall trees providing shade. The last segment of the road is unsealed but easily managed. A truly restful and refreshing place.

Water Temperature: 60°C.

5. Mataranka Thermal Pool and Rainbow Springs, Northern Territory

One of the most Instagramable, and free, hot springs is certainly the Mataranka Thermal Pool and Rainbow Springs. Settled in Elsey National Park, this pool provides a relaxing swim at a not-so-hot temperature. It’s known to get crowded, so hit it up early in the morning. There’s plenty of turtles near the tall trees and lush bushes! A floating device is a must as you shouldn’t touch the bottom of the pool. There’s entertainment at night as well as food facilities. If you like more commercialised places, this one will hit the spot.

Water Temperature: 30°C.

Entry Fee: Free.

6. Bitter Springs, Northern Territory

Bitter Springs is one of the two springs in Mataranka but it tends to be less crowded than the previous one. There are cabins where you can stay to enjoy the springs longer and explore the area. The water is the same temperature as the Rainbow Springs, but there’s one big difference – Bitter Springs close for swimming once they spot a crocodile nearby.

Floatation devices are also a must, and visiting early is the best option to admire the beauty of the surrounding nature.

Water Temperature: 28°C to 30°C.

7. Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs, Tasmania

A 90-minute drive from Hobart will take you to the Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs in South Tasmania. After touring the caves, you can enjoy the man-made thermal swimming pool, which accumulates and circulates the spring water rich in minerals. Magnificent Tasmanian forests surround the pool, and you can also enjoy the open fires and barbecues.

Water Temperature: 28°C.

Entry Fee: $5 per adult, $12 per family.

8. Zebedee Hot Springs El Questro, Western Australia

If you’ve decided to take on the Gibb River Road adventure, these springs are a must-visit! They’re easily accessible during the dry season and a short 1.5km walk from the car park. Located in the untamed nature of El Questro Wilderness Park, they’re pretty popular among visitors passing through the area. The combination of untouched nature, thermal water, and lush flora make these springs among one of the best springs in Australia. Note that the Zebedee Springs is only open from 7am to 12pm, to reduce the environmental impact.

Water Temperature: 26°C to 34°C.

9. Hepburn Springs, Victoria

The small resort town of Hepburn Springs was established during the gold rush back in the 1850s. This gem is less than 50km from Ballarat, in the middle of the largest concentration of mineral springs. One of the oldest traditional bathhouses is the Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa, where you can enjoy social mineral bathing in a relaxation bathing pool and spa pool for up to 90 minutes.

Water Temperature: 34°C to 36°C.

10. Peninsula Hot Springs, Victoria

Peninsula Hot Springs is located a 90-minute drive from Melbourne on the picturesque Mornington Penninsula. The geothermal springs are 637 metres deep underground and spring into the spa pools. You can pick a recharge, restore, or revitalise experience. The tranquillity of the location combined with the healing and relaxing properties of the geothermal water makes for a perfect spa treat!

Water Temperature: 34°C to 42°C.

11. Lightning Ridge Bore Baths, New South Wales

It’s hard to come up with a better option than the free baths of Lightning Ridge. The two million-year-old springs of Lightning Ridge fill up the Artesian Bore Baths via an artesian bore – one of the few hundreds restored in order to preserve this natural treasure for future generations. The open-air baths are open every day with a short break for cleaning from 10am to 12pm. So drop by, relax, unwind and reap the benefits of the hot springs in these outdoor baths.

Water Temperature: 40-50°C.

12. Moree Artesian Baths, New South Wales

For a reasonably priced and extraordinary experience, visit the three artesian baths in Moore. The water in two of the pools is thermal, coming from their own private bore located 900m underground, and ranging from 45°C to 32°C, while the third is a cold saltwater swimming pool. It’s an excellent pastime for the whole family as there are water slides, BBQ facilities, and other activities.

Water Temperature: 32-45°C.

Entry Fee: $10 per adult, $25 per family.

13. Yarrangobilly Caves Thermal Pool, New South Wales

Settled deep in the Yarrangobilly area of the Kosciuszko National Park, this hot spring flows into a large 2.5m deep pool which cascades into a smaller children’s pool. Surrounded by the tall eucalyptus trees, this pool is a pleasant unexpected encounter. To reach it, you have to take the 700m steep track from the parking. There’s a picnic area on site, along with changing rooms and toilets, so you can easily spend a whole day soaking and relaxing. Bonus – you might spot water dragons and platypi!

Water Temperature: 27°C.

Entry Fee: $4 per vehicle, free per person.

14. Blue Mountains Sparadise, New South Wales

The Blue Mountains are probably the last place where you’d expect to find a Japanese Bath and Spa facility. The Sparadise features 3 outdoor and 1 indoor hot spring baths and 4 individual hot spring baths. All of them are filled with thermal water from underground springs, and some are infused with herbal treatments to ease your muscles and energise your body. In addition, there is a large area around the baths designed for relaxation with a cup of tea overlooking Lake Lyell. This experience is on the pricier side but worth considering if you want to try something new.

Water Temperature: 40°C.

15. Kimberley Warm Springs, Tasmania

The geothermal Kimberley Warm Springs is settled 72km away from Launceston in northern Tasmania. These springs are not swim-friendly as there’s plenty of algae in the water. However, you can spot a unique situation – as the water emerges from the ground, the sand at the bottom bubbles in a motion resembling a lava lamp. There are picnic facilities and toilets, and the nature around is perfect for a sunny day out!

Water Temperature: 25°C.

Bonus: The ‘Forbbiden’ Hot Springs

Did you know that Australia is home to one of the three radioactive hot springs in the world? They’re called Paralana Radioactive Hot Springs and are located in the Flinders Ranges region in South Australia.
Water in these kinds of springs is heated due to the uranium breakdown in the surrounding rocks. It reaches a temperature of 62°C but entering the waters, swimming or touching them is not recommended. There’s also presence of radioactive radon gas and green slime. While we don’t advise visiting these springs on your own, it’s cool to know about them!

Easily accessible from Brisbane, you can reach the outskirts of Redlands within 30 minutes, it makes for a great road trip or family day out. Additionally, it’s only a 1-hour drive from the Gold Coast too.

Start Your Morning At King Island

King Island for many is a highlight of their visit to the Redlands Coast. Located in Wellington Point, King Island is a small island situated 1km from land. What’s special about it? Well, you can only access the island at low tide, otherwise the sand bank is underwater. Timing is everything when visiting this island. Most visitors try to arrange their visit for sunrise or sunset when the tide is low as it makes for a spectacular viewing spot. It’s also a popular dog walking location. The island itself has a short path through the middle and you’re able to look back towards the coast. It’s a nice spot to sit and relax but make sure you don’t miss the tide, otherwise you’ll be waiting a while to walk the 1km back to the coast.

Accessible by the same car park in Wellington Point as King Island, it’s also worth visiting Wellington Point Jetty. It’s a fairly nice lookout spot but the real draw is its location. If you’re an early riser then it’s a fantastic place for sunrise photography.

Breakfast In Manly

The bayside suburb of Manly is a great stop to find a good breakfast. There’s a decent selection of cafes to choose from. If you’re looking for a view with breakfast then head to the esplanade and it shouldn’t be too long before you find a café of choice. Otherwise, there are also eateries situated on the parallel streets, including Bare Naked Bowls and Cambridge Lane Espresso + Kitchen.

Walk breakfast off by taking a stroll along Manly harbour. Here you can watch punters race remote-controlled boats and browse the dozens of boats moored in the harbour. If you’re visiting on a Sunday, you’re in luck as the Manly Creative Markets will be on too.

View The Famous Wynnum Wading Pool

North of Manly you’ll come across the suburb of Wynnum. Great by foot or cycle, the Eddie Santagiuliana Way walk is a picturesque trail stretching 8kms. A mix of boardwalk and concrete paths, it’s a leisurely walk, suitable for most. Spot wetlands, creeks, mangroves and bushland. The highlight of this trail though is that you’re likely to spot a koala in the branches above, as well as numerous birds. It’s a wildlife lover’s dream.

Step Back In Time At Ormiston House

One of Redlands Coast’s best-loved historic treasures, the beautiful homestead overlooks Moreton Bay. Built between 1858 and 1865, it has been carefully restored over the years to allow visitors to embrace one of Queensland’s finest examples of colonial architecture. It is open to the public on Sundays between midday and 4pm and is entirely run by volunteers, who are enthusiastic to talk to the public about the history of the house and its grounds.

Catch The Sunest At Cleveland Point Lighthouse

Cleveland Point Light, also known as Point Cleveland Light, is a lighthouse located on the north-eastern tip of Cleveland Point. The lighthouse overlooks Moreton Bay to the east and Raby Bay to the west. If you’re visiting, pack a blanket and a picnic, it’s a great location to sit in the afternoon sun and watch the sun go down over the horizon. Not only is it a great sunset location but the lighthouse itself has an interesting history. It’s the second lighthouse to stand there, built in 1865 and it’s unusual due to the hexagonal frame, rather than the traditional round. Also, don’t fret if you forgot to pack food. The locally loved Lighthouse Restaurant is across the carpark, offering spectacular ocean dining views and fish ‘n’ chip takeaways.

What You Need To Know Before Your Visit

Where Exactly Can You Find Paronella Park?

Paronella Park doesn’t exactly have the most obvious location – it’s definitely hidden away. Technically, it’s located in Mena Creek, which isn’t exactly very well known to anyone (unless you’re a local). That said, there are signs on the Bruce Highway that point it out. Coming from Cairns, the drive is about 120km south or if you’re coming from Townsville, it’s about 280km north.

Where Can You Stay?

Now that you know where to find Paronella Park, you might be wondering where you can stay. Well, you’re actually in luck! Paronella Park has onsite accommodation options to suit everyone. If camping isn’t your style or you’re looking to splurge for a few nights, there are six cabins available at Paronella Park. There are also onsite campgrounds that are suitable for tents, camper trailers and caravans. But, be aware that onsite accommodation generally books out fast, so make sure you get in quick and have a few back-up options in case.

If you can’t get into any of the accommodation options at the park, don’t despair, because there are a bunch of other places to consider. Mena Creek Hotel is just 200m from Paronella Park and offers a range of room sizes for you to choose from, as well as free onsite parking.

Alternatively, for caravan parks, you can head a little further north to Innisfail. August Moon Caravan Park and Etty Bay Cabins & Caravan Park are just two options to consider – both are located in south Innisfail, so there won’t be too much of a drive to Paronella Park.

Pricing

One last piece of important information for you to keep in mind before you visit Paronella Park is the costs involved. While this shouldn’t affect your decision to go, because obviously it’s worth it in the end, you do still need to factor this in. Pricing for onsite accommodation varies depending on how long you’re staying and whether you’re visiting during peak periods – so keep this in mind when you’re planning your trip. 

As for the tickets to the park, they cost $50 for adults, and $28 for children aged 5-15. These tickets give you access to the whole park for as long as you choose to stay. And remember, if you sign up to be a Livin’ Barry member, you’ll get 10% off your ticket, bringing the price down to $45 (for an adult ticket).

History Of The Park

Humble Beginnings

Paronella Park is the product of the vision of a Spanish man by the name of Jose Paronella. He arrived in Australia from Catalonia in 1913 initially working on sugar cane farms. After returning to Spain to marry Margarita, the newlyweds returned to Australia in 1925 for their honeymoon. It was during this second trip that Jose made the choice to purchase the land in Mena Creek that he’d seen last time he was in Australia. He wanted to build something that could provide entertainment to his guests and the public, and so, the construction of the park began.

Jose’s first job was to construct the “Grand Staircase” to facilitate easier transportation of building materials between the lower and upper levels. Jose and Margarita then had a cottage hand-built from stone, which later became their new home. They then set to work constructing the entertainment area – a ballroom that became a movie theatre on the weekends.

Opening Of The Park

A hydro electric plant was also installed to power the whole park. From 1935, the park opened to the public with Jose and Margarita welcoming guests to play tennis, watch movies and dance the night away at the ballroom.

From Jose’s Death To The Present

After Jose’s death in 1948, his son and daughter continued their father’s dream, despite how natural disasters caused damage to multiple structures in the park. By 1993, the park was purchased by the current owners, who set to work repairing the park to reopen it to the public and restore Jose’s dream.

Things To Do At The Park

So now you’ve heard about the fascinating story behind the park’s origins, let’s highlight what you definitely need to check out while you’re there.

What To See

• The Grand Staircase
• Jose and Margarita’s cottage
• The ballroom/ movie theatre
• The castle
• The old toilet block

These are just some of the old ruins you will see that have been restored and remain open to the public. While you cannot properly see the hydro electric plant, it has also been restored and the park now runs entirely off the power produced by it.
