• Basic Road Info: The Great Southern Touring Route is a loop track starting and ending in Melbourne. It’s 864km long and fully sealed, except for some optional detours. Most of the road has up to 100km/h limit but beware of wildlife crossing.

If you want to avoid them, opt for the wintertime, when you can spot some whales and waterfalls start to fill up. Even though nature is awakening in spring, you can’t predict the amount of rainfall, and you might end up with a not-so-pleasant road trip.
• Estimated Travel Time: Compared to other road trips, the Great Southern Touring Route is short, and the fact that it takes you exclusively through sealed roads cuts the travel time. You can do it in approximately 6 days, but you might rush and miss some of the charming towns. Allow at least 8 to 10 days.
• What To Bring: This route moves through populated places, so even in a case of emergency, you won’t be stranded on the way. Melbourne to Torquay

Start your journey by getting on Highway One from Melbourne and drive 75km down the coastline. Your first stop is Geelong. Go for a stroll through the Geelong Botanical Gardens and visit the National Wool Museum. Learn about sheep farming and shearing, and get up close to the machines used for carpet weaving and knitting socks. It’s the place where history, science and fashion come together. Geelong Gaol is another captivating piece of history, a former prison operating until 1991.

Enjoy lunch by the beach and travel 22km further to Torquay, the surf capital of the world. Visit the Australian National Surfing Museum, a fascinating place even for those who don’t surf. Take a walk up to the lookout of Bells Beach and enjoy watching the pros conquering the waves.

Torquay to Apollo Bay

Leave Torquay and drive merely 20km to Anglesea, a charming small coastal town. Start your day by a walk through the Point Addis Marine National Park. Enjoy some stunning views from the platforms before continuing your journey to the Loveridge Lookout. For kangaroo sighting, stop at Anglesea Golf Club and catch them relaxing under the trees.

Grab a treat at the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery and continue your drive to Lorne. Pick some mesmerizing falls to visit in the area; the Erskine Falls, Lower and Upper Kalimna Falls, Phantom or Henderson Falls. Each one has a unique appeal, and the hikes vary in difficulty.
Get back on the road, and in 55km, you’ll reach Apollo Bay, the gateway to the Great Otway National Park.

Apollo Bay & Great Otway National Park

Start your day with a hike to the Cape Otway Lightstation for some magnificent views and a history lesson. The Old Cable Station Museum is another essential piece of history, as it was once the only connection between Tasmania and Australia.

Your following stop is the Great Otway National Park, the real treasure of the area. Plan at least a day to dive into its lush greenery, scenic waterfalls and red forest. Traverse the stunning Australian south woods and meet some wallabies along the way. Hopetoun and Beauchamp Falls are a must-visit. There’s free camping in the park as well as walking platforms. For a different view of the forest, visit the Otway Fly Treetop Adventures and take the 600-metre long, 47 metres high treetop walk or the zip line tour.

Finally, hit the Wreck Beach at low tide, to spot some significant remnants of a shipwreck. Beware, you’ll need to climb and descend over 300 stairs and some slippery rocks!

Apollo Bay To Warrnambool

Just 85km further from Apollo Bay, you’ll reach one of the route’s highlights, the Twelve Apostles. Ensure to visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds as well as to enjoy the majestic limestone stacks in peace. Due to the natural process of erosion, there are only seven left, therefore the next time you get the chance to visit them, there might be even fewer left. Warrnambool To Dunkeld

Before heading out north, stop at Port Fairy, the small charming town with picturesque scenery. Take a walk to Griffiths Island and visit the lighthouse along the edge. Captain John Griffiths, was the first one to bring white settlers from Tasmania to Portland Bay, as a result, the island was named after him. There are plenty of wallabies around and a lovely beach walking area.

Leave Port Fairy and drive an hour to Dunkeld, where some fantastic hikes await. Dunkeld is located on the southern tip of the Grampians National Park. Visit the Dunkel Arboretum, a botanical paradise filled with ancient red gum trees and kangaroos. Depending on your fitness level, you can take the Grampians Peaks Trail and stop by the must-see locations as Boroka Lookout, Reeds Lookout, The Balconies and Mackenzie Falls.
In fact, if you’re up for a bigger challenge, take the 3.5km loop track to the Chimney Pots – cliff formations in the remote side of the Grampians Park.

Dunkeld To Halls Gap

This is the section for 4WD lovers; the Grampians Park and Halls Gap provide some interesting 4WD tracks. Brambuk, The National Park & Cultural Centre, is an award-winning visitors centre with a wonderful representation of the Aboriginal culture, history and rock art sites. Take the Pinnacle walk, a medium difficulty 4.3km loop taking you to the top where you can enjoy a nice picnic. After that, you can take the descend to the Venus Baths for a refreshing swim.

The Halls Zoo is one of the area’s highlights, especially if you’re travelling with kids. It features over 160 different animals, like giraffes, cheetahs, monkeys, crocodiles, kangaroos and koalas. The walk along the zoo is 2.5km long and wheelchair friendly. You’ll find a kiosk for food, toilets, a playground and free BBQ areas.

Halls Gap To Ballarat

Get back on the road for a longer drive, 145km to Ballarat, the centre of the Victorian architectural heritage. Your first stop is Sovereign Hill, a living outdoor museum showcasing life in Australia in the 1850s goldrush era. It’s both fun and educational; it provides horse carriage rides and hands-on activities for visitors of all ages. Further, visit the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, where you can relax by Lake Wendouree.

For a different close encounter with wildlife, visit the Ballarat Wildlife Park. You’ll find over 100 free-roaming kangaroos, koalas, wombats, little penguins, dingoes, Tasmanian devils, snakes, tortoises, emus, Sumatran tigers, and so much more. Heading out of Ballarat, there’s an optional but very recommended 45km detour you can take to Daylesford. The region is home to the Passing Clouds Winery, Lake Daylesford and Spa Country. It features tons of weekend getaway properties, farms and mineral springs. Are you feeling tired already? Treat yourself to a spa day and a wellness treatment at some of the many resorts.

For a different kind of experience, take the Daylesford Spa Country Train, a volunteer-run tourist railway, taking you into the wombat forest.

Back on the road to Melbourne, stop for magnificent views over the city at Mount Macedon or a glass of wine at Gisborne Peak Winery.

And you’re done! The Great Southern Touring Route ends where you started, in Melbourne. Where will the road take you next?

• Basic Road Info: The Red Centre Way is not a specific road; it’s a little over 1100km long route, a combination of Namatjira Drive, Luritja Road, Larapinta Drive as well as the Lasseter Highway. It goes through sealed road and unsealed 4WD tracks. It would be best if you take a 4WD for this route, even though it’s predominantly paved. The Mereenie Loop is strictly a 4WD as well as most secluded detours.

Alice Springs To Glen Helen Gorge

The first leg of the Red Centre Way takes you through the MacDonnell Ranges and the abundance of unmissable stops. Taking off from Alice Springs, you’ll reach Glen Helen Gorge in just 132km. Along the ride, the first stop is Simpsons Gap, only 20 minutes out of Alice Springs. Standley Chasm is the next one, located on privately owned land in the West MacDonnell Ranges, with sky-high walls around the chasm that change their colours with the sun’s movement during the day.

If you’re feeling brave, dive at Ellery Creek Big Hole, a permanent water hole with freezing waters all through the year. Serpentine Gorge is right next door to it, featuring a wonderful lookout just a short hike away. You get to cool off at the small waterhole along the track. Glen Helen is your final destination for the day, a scenic spot with a tranquil atmosphere as well as a permanent water hole.

Glen Helen Gorge To Mereenie Loop

The second part of the Red Centre Way takes you to the doorstep of the challenging 4WD track – the Meerenie Loop track. But before that, take a detour to Ormiston Gorge, an easily accessible gorge with a sandy bank and freezing water. Take the Ghost Gum Walk up to the lookout, where you can find amazing views as well as a kiosk with snacks.

The Redbank Gorge is the next stop, a tad more challenging to access; it requires lots of rocks and sand you need to navigate through. But the gorge is worth it!

Just 133km from Glen Helen, excluding the detours, you’ll reach the Meerenie Loop.

Meerenie Loop To Watarrka National Park

The next part of the Red Centre Way takes you deeper into the remoteness of the outback, so make sure to stock up on fuel and food. The Mereenie Loop takes you to the Kings Canyon in the Central Australian Outback. The best way to traverse the area is to take some memorable walks.

The 6km long Kings Canyon Rim Walk starts with challenging 500 steps. It takes you through the marvellous landscapes of the canyon, sliding to the Garden of Eden waterhole and the staggering rock formations of the Lost City.

The 4km long South Wall Return Walk and the 2.5km long Kings Creek Walk are equally impressive as well as easier to do. The canyon is the route’s highlight, so take enough time to take in the million years old views.

Watarrka National Park To Yulara

Fill up your tank for the following, longer stretch from Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park to Yulara. The road between the two is 272km long and remote. You can expect to pass a handful of vehicles and a small number of stops. Mount Coner Lookout, also known as “Fooluru”- because first-timers often confuse it with Uluru, it’s very close to what Ayers Rock looks like from afar. Climb to the other side over the dune for a view of the salt lake. It’s the last good rest stop for a while, so make use of it.

At Yulara, you can visit the Red Desert Reptiles to learn about the reptiles of the Red Desert of Central Australia and how they thrive in this harsh environment. You can hold some of the reptiles for a photo, especially entertaining if you’re travelling with kids! At Wintjiri Arts & Museum, you get to see more wild animals, birds and insects that live in Central Australia. There are more details on the history and development of the area as well as the Aboriginal culture.

The second highlight of the Red Centre Way is, of course, Uluru or Ayers Rock. The gem of Central Australia is reachable within a 25minute ride from Yulara. The ticket to Ayers Rock ensures a three-day entry, precisely how much you need to explore the valley in depth. Depending on your budget, there are a plethora of unique paid and free activities. The area is known to be pricy with almost non-existent free camping.

Besides Uluru, visit the Olgas -another unbelievable rock structure in Kata Tjuta. There are numerous walks with varying difficulty that take you through the best spots in the Valley of the Winds. Don’t forget to check the Walpa Gorge and the Mutitjulu Waterhole along the way. If you feel like treating yourself, hit the Field of Light after dark. Kata Tjuta National Park To Alice Springs

It’s time to get back to where you started; from Uluru, you’ll need to drive around 4 hours or 468km to reach Alice Springs. When you need a break, stop at Erldunda Roadhouse to meet their friendly emus and get lunch. Stuarts Well Roadhouse is another great roadhouse settled next to a camel farm.

Once you reach Alice Springs, take a few days to take in everything this vivid town offers. Visit the Alice Springs Desert Park or cuddle a kangaroo at the Kangaroo Sanctuary. The Telegraph Sation Historical Reserve is a good trip back in time, and the Anzac Hill provides impressive views over Alice Springs. If you’d prefer a relaxing stroll, visit the Olive Pink Botanic Gardens.

The Darwin to Adelaide road trip is a genuine Australian Outback experience filled with hidden gems, oasis and wildlife. And what better time to do it than on your Big Lap!

Important Travel Tips

• Basic Road Info: This stretch of the Stuart Highway is over 3,030km long and sealed since 1987. It served as an emergency landing strip for the Royal Flying Doctor Service for a long time, and there are still some signs left. Many kangaroos go out at dusk and dawn, so avoid driving during the night, get a kangaroo bumper and a whistle. Be careful when camping near rivers, the Northern Territory is crocodile galore!
• Best Travel Time: The Top End has a tropical climate, resulting in cyclones, heavy rainfall and floodings from November to April. It’s best to avoid this time since it can be dangerous. The winter season, May to October, is the best time, it’s not cold, and you’ll experience dry, pleasant weather.
• Estimated Travel Time: If you were about to drive the route non-stop, it would take you approximately 40 hours. However, why would anyone do that? Take at least 10 days to explore everything the road has to offer. There are remarkable detours that are worth the extra effort.
• What To Bring: In spite of the highway being sealed, you’ll need a 4WD for most detours. There are long distances between service stations, and they’re more expensive in the Outback, so bring extra fuel, oil and coolant. Carry excess water – dehydration and heat exhaustion is very common in the desert. Good walking shoes, bug repellent, spare tyres and sunscreen are a must. Entertainment for the kids is essential since they can find the ride boresome.

Darwin To Katherine

Taking off from Darwin, you’ll reach Katherine in 317km. A detour to the Kakadu National Park for a day can be the highlight of your road trip. You can walk to Ubirr and climb the top of the rock to see some ancient artwork as well as the stunning horizon. Gunlom Waterfall Creek is the perfect picnic spot, and Maguk Gorge is a fabulous swimming spot. If you’re willing to chase waterfalls visit Jim Jim Falls too.

Continue to Katherine, stop for a swim at the Katherine or Mataranka Hot Springs, Katherine Gorge and Edith Falls. If you’re feeling more adventurous, skip the swim and explore Nitmiluk National Park and Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park.

It was an important stop in the air race from London to Sydney and a refuel station for Qantas planes to Singapore up until 1965. The Daly Waters Pub is the place to chill out in the evening; you can examine the number of memorabilia left by travellers!

Tennant Creek is 400km down south and the former centre of the gold rush age. Battery Hill Mining Centre tells a wonderful story of this exceptional part of the past. An unmissable stop is the Devils Marbles, the perfect spheric stones, a sacred Aboriginal place. You can learn more about the name and the legend behind them at the Nyinkka Nyunyu Art & Culture Centre.

For a good walk and lunch in nature, visit lake Mary Ann. It’s a great spot for kids to meet local birds and equally pleasant for adults. Enjoy some of the best sunsets on your road trip and stay an extra day. The following day visit the Tennant Creek Telegraph Station. There are several telegraph stations along your route; tour this one so you can compare them!

Tennant Creek To Barrow Creek

Another strange stop in the area is the UFO capital of Australia, Wycliffe Well Roadhouse. This roadhouse is packed with articles about UFO spotting in the area, pictures, and you can get some weird souvenirs!

Barrow Creek To Alice Springs

In 300km, you’ll arrive at Alice Springs. One of the most popular stops on the Stuart Highway is full of attractions and activities. Visit Alice Springs Desert Park to find out the area’s secrets, climb Anzac Hill or Mount Gillen. Learn more about the road’s former purpose at the Royal Flying Doctor Service Museum. For animal lovers, there is the Kangaroo Sanctuary where you can hold a baby kangaroo and Reptile Centre, where you can hold a 10kg Python!

Alice Springs Telegraph Station Historical Reserve is well-preserved and offers excellent insights into communication in the past. Just 130km from Alice Springs, you’ll find Finke Gorge National Park. It’s best known for the Red Cabbage palms which grom in the Palm Valley. You can put your 4WD to the test at the nearby tracks or have a relaxed picnic at the end of the day.

Even though climbing is banned, seeing the 550 million-year-old rock is still a one-of-a-kind experience. Continuing down the road, you’ll see the longest fence in the world, the Dingo Fence. It was essentially constructed to keep Dingos at bay but now represents a border between the Northern Territory and South Australia. Have a drink at Kulgera Roadhouse and relax before the next stretch.

It’s not beaming with popular tourist attractions, but it’s an excellent base for visiting Flinders Ranges. You also shouldn’t miss the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Gardens and Wadlata Outback Centre. The Port Augusta Train Park is a fun activity for the young ones, and for some superb panoramic views, climb the Water Tower Lookout.

Technically the Stuart Highway ends at Port Augusta, but if you decide to finish the top to bottom road trip, continue 300km to Adelaide.

You’re officially back into civilization, so make use of it! Hit the Adelaide Central Market for some tasty fruits and veggies, take the Glenelg Tram and stroll around the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. Visit the zoo, Himeji Garden or the Gully waterfall. There are so many things you can do, so don’t hesitate to linger a while longer.

• Basic Road Info: The Savannah Way is a 3700km long self-drive route driven mainly on Highway 1 and sealed roads, as well as off-road. It traverses through North Queensland, the Northern Territory and the Kimberley Region. The Queensland Government defines it as a State Strategic Touring Route. The Way is easy to follow as it includes extensive road signage, maps and informational centres. However, there are sections of the road up to 700km long without a roadhouse or service station, leading to driver fatigue.
• Best Travel Time: May to September or the dry season is the best time to do the Savannah Way. If you choose to do the route during the wet season, you’ll find some road parts closed due to flooding. While the original course doesn’t include river crossing, you won’t be able to make some unmissable detours in the wet season.
• Estimated Travel Time: Allow at least 20 days to experience the authentic charm of the Savannah Way if you decide to do the entire course. You can do most sections in less than 10 days; for the Queensland section, for example, you need 6 days.
• What To Bring: A high-clearance 4WD is a must, as well as fuel canisters. Fuel can get 40% more expensive the deeper inland you go. Bring spare tyres, sunscreen, extra groceries, drinking water and water-resistant walking shoes. Don’t forget your bathing suit!

Cairns To Undara

Your Savannah Way adventure starts at Cairns, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Merely 60km west From tropical Queensland, the route takes you through Atherton Tablelands. Drive through the rich macadamia fields and stop for coffee in the region responsible for 70% of Australia’s coffee production. Drop by the Ravenshoe Hotel, the highest pub at 916km above sea level or relax by the Millstream Falls. An hour and a half drive from the falls will take you to Undara Volcanic National Park, settled near the small town of Mount Surprise. Undara means a long way in Aboriginal – the park protects the largest lava tube in Australia. About 190,000 years ago, 23 cubic kilometres of lava ran into a river bed and kept flowing for 160km, ending in the world’s most extended lava flow and lava tube. Settle for the night at some of the camps near the National Park.

Undara To Georgetown

Take off from Undara, and in 200km, you’ll reach the tiny, sleepy Georgetown. This former gold mining town is the core of the Gulf gemstone region. Visit the exquisite Ted Elliott Mineral Collection at the council building in the centre. Georgetown is your gateway station for Cobbold Gorge. This hidden outback oasis is one of the youngest gorges in Queensland, only 10,000 years old! It’s available for a visit via a 3-hour guided tour only from April to October, and it’s an exceptional experience you shouldn’t miss.

Georgetown To Normanton

The route takes you from Georgetown to Normanton; you can opt for a halfway stop at Croydon. A walk through the old mining town and the visitors’ centre speaks volumes about the history of Croydon. Further down the road, you’ll reach Normanton. Although fairly small and sparsely populated, there’s one must-do activity in Normanton – the historic Gulflander train ride. Don’t miss a photo with Krys, the large crocodile sculpture and visit the Mutton Hole Wetlands Conservation Park. For a unique pub experience drop by at the Purple Pub.

Normanton To Burketown

Taking off from Normanton stop halfway for a quick dip at the Leichhardt Falls, before continuing to Burketown. The park is an idyllic oasis in the outback, flaunting dramatic gorge scenery, diverse wildlife, exciting walks, kayaking, and fossils deposits from 25 million years ago. It’s the place where the orange sandstone cliffs are intervening with the emerald blue waters. Stop by some of the bush pubs for refreshment. Don’t forget to try fishing while in Burketown. The World Barramundi Fishing Championships happen here every Easter, but the fish are here year-round for you to catch. If you’re an early riser, you’ll get to experience the ‘Morning Glory’- a phenomenon where the clouds travel more than 60km/h before dawn, from late September to early November.

Burketown To Borroloola

The Queensland leg of the Savannah Way ends, and the Northern Territory begins. An hour-long walk through the wildlife-rich Limmen National Park will take you to these 5 to 40-metre high rock formations. Since they’re off the beaten path, it’s never crowded. You can spend the night here, make a detour to Lorella Springs Wilderness Park the next day for another 4WD challenge, or continue to Cape Crawford.

Continue your journey down to Halls Creek, where you can see Wolfie Creek Crater, formed when a meteorite hit the earth 300 thousand years ago. Walk to the striking formation of white quartz called the China Wall, and end the day at the Mary Pool, part of a cattle station with some friendly cows roaming around occasionally.

• Basic Road Info: The Nullarbor route is driven on the Eyre Highway which is a sealed, flat and straight 1,256-kilometre long road. It starts at Norseman in Western Australia and ends at Ceduna in South Australia. You can manage it with a 2WD, but some detours might require a 4WD. Don’t let the straight, flat road fool you; the speed limit is 110km/h on the open road and 60 to 80km/h when passing through towns and settlements.
• Best Travel Time: While it’s a tradition for many Australians to cross the Nullarbor in summer, you should avoid peak summer. You’ll spend the majority of the trip in your vehicle, so you don’t want to depend on the A/C to survive the heat. On the other hand, winter can bring some heavy winds, and in the plains, there’s no sheltered road; they’ll come right at you. Battling the winds requires more power ending in high fuel consumption. If you want to catch a glimpse of the whales, go from May to October.
• Estimated Travel Time: You can drive the Nullarbor in ten days or less, depending on how much exploration you’ll be doing in the region. There are so many places worth stopping by, and you are restricted to drive only during the day. There’s plenty of wildlife crossing the road at night, at dusk, and at dawn, so avoid driving during these hours.
• What To Bring: The road might seem deserted, but a few roadhouses along the route provide fuel, gas, tire change, and repair services. They do charge more, so fill up at Ceduna or Norseman if you can. Stock up on drinking water, bring some extra fuel, a spare tyre, and sunscreen. There are good food stops on the road but be sure to pack a few days’ worth of groceries. Oh, and bring a kangaroo whistle to avoid hitting a roo!

Norseman To Fraser Range

Norseman is an 8-hour drive from Perth and the gateway to Nullarbor Road for those starting from West Australia. Once in town, hit up the Norseman Visitors Centre for all the must-sees, like the Bromus Dam or Dundas Rocks and Lone Grave areas. The Dundas area was the starting point on the quest for gold and the longest operating gold mine in West Australia. To seal it all in, take a walk to the Beacon Hill lookout for a splendid panoramic view. Norseman is the last major town in Western Australia, with a population of merely 600 people. A one hour drive from here will take you to Fraser Range.

Fraser Range To Balladonia

Vast granite hills encircle Fraser, with Mt Pleasant being the highest one at 579 metres. Here you’ll find the world’s largest Eucalyptus Hardwood Forest made out of blackbutt, salmon gum, and gimlet trees, rising 20 to 30 metres upwards. They’re home to incredible birdlife. The historic Fraser Range Station was the first station settled on the Nullarbor Road and is located right among the hills. The station’s grounds once served as a shearing centre for shepherds. For the adventurous, there are plenty of 4WD tracks and bush walks. If you’re keen on new flavours, try the Damara sheep meat! Get back on the road, and in just 115km, you’ll reach Balladonia.

Balladonia To Caiguna

Balladonia in Aboriginal means “big rock by itself”, and it’s an accurate description of the area. It’s a small roadhouse community settled next to the Balladonia Rocks. Take a 14km detour and visit the Afghan Rock, the place with freshwater dams that served as refreshment for the early Afghan camel drivers. Balladonia hit the first pages worldwide in 1979 when the Skylab space station passed over it and left traces of debris. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the leftovers and newspaper articles at the free Balladonia Cultural Heritage Museum. This is also the beginning of the longest straight road in the world, the 90 miles straight. Get a picture with the sign and get back on the road to Caiguna.

Caiguna To Cocklebiddy

If you got on the road with a 4WD, Caiguna would be your favourite part. Stop by the Caiguna Blowhole to feel the cool air blowing out of it in the middle of the driest parts of Australia. Take a detour to Nuytsland Nature Reserve; the region’s prime attraction that encompasses both the pristine beaches and the high Baxter Cliffs. Some parts require beach driving, so dare only if you’re an experienced 4WD driver. Take another detour off the main road to Australia’s first bird observatory, the Eyre Bird Observatory, established in 1977. You’ll see honeyeaters, silvereyes, brown falcons, cockatoos and even western pygmy possums. In less than 65km you’ll arrive at Cocklebiddy for a much-deserved rest.

Cocklebiddy To Madura

Just 10km north of Eyre Highway, you’ll find the Cockabiddy Caves or famous as Nullarbor Caves. The world’s most extended cave diving penetration happened at the Cocklebiddy Cave in 1983. If you’re an experienced diver, you get the unique chance to dive under the Nullarbor Plains. Go 26km south, and you’ll reach Twilight Cove, the location of three major shipwrecks in the past due to the king waves typical for the region. Get on Eyre Highway for another 90km to Madura.

Free: Madura Pass Lookout or On Top Of The Ridge.

Madura To Eucla

Madura was once picked as a location for breeding cavalry horses for the British Indian Army due to the free-flowing bore water. It’s surrounded by the Madura Shelf, 265,600 square kilometres of sedimentary rock containing geothermal gradients. Today, Madura and the surrounding area are part of Madura Station, used for grazing sheep. A short detour west of Madura takes you to the scenic lookout overviewing the Madura Pass across the Roe Plains. You may also find natural blowholes nearby. The area is still actively used for pastoral purposes.

Your next stop is almost 200km down the road at Eucla. Make a quick stop at Mundrabilla Roadhouse to see where Australia’s largest meteorite was found.

Eucla To Border Village

Before crossing to Border Village, stop at Eucla, a must-see spot on the Nullarbor Road. Witness how the Old Telegraph Station slowly gets consumed by the colossal dunes at the top of the Hampton Tableland. The Eucla National Park might seem dry, but it hides amazing wildflowers, the Wilson Bluff with spectacular views and the Delisser sandhills. You can find rare species of plants that exist only among the limestone cliff.
Walk to the abandoned pier, once used to ship supplies to pioneers, and spend a few moments relaxing on the beach. Border Village is on the other side of the border in South Australia.

Border Village To Nullarbor National Park

Nullarbor National Park is not more than 50km away from Border Village off the Eyre Highway. This fascinating national park offers you the option to watch the Southern Right and Humpbacks whales from May to October. You can encounter wild camel herds, kangaroos, dingos and wombats. The views of the Bunda Cliffs are unspoken; it feels like you’ve reached the edge of the world. Be careful; the limestone crumbles easily, so don’t go too close to the edge. After you’ve taken in the views, settle down at some of the phenomenal campsites along the road.

Nullarbor National Park To Ceduna

The Nullarbor Road ends at Ceduna, 450km from the Nullarbor National Park. Along the last stretch of the road, you’ll traverse through the Yalata Aboriginal Land and need permission if you plan on making detours off the highway. It’s worth stopping at Fowlers Bay for whale watching, spotting the sea lion colony or fishing off the jetty. Another stop is Penong, where you can surf or relax on Cactus Beach and see the centuries-old windmills. Ceduna is a small port town settled on the shores of Murat Bay. In Aboriginal language, ‘Ceduna’ means ‘a place to sit down and rest’, which you’ll probably need after finishing the Nullarbor Road.

You can do it in as little as four days, but the region is full of history, dinosaur discoveries and dramatic landscapes that deserve more than a few seconds of observation. If you’re ready, here’s everything you need to know, pack and do on the Overlanders Way.

Important Travel Tips

• Basic Road Info: The Overlanders Way was an essential route in World War II and a practical cattle transfer route from the Northern Territory to the coastal markets in Queensland. Today it’s a 1550km long strategic touring route. Both highways are fully sealed. During the wet season, rivers might overflow on the road, and some narrow parts of the road require more cautious driving.
• Best Travel Time: You can drive the Overlanders Way any season but be aware of flooding and storms if you do it in the summer. The wildlife is more active during wet season, and waterholes get full. However, some towns might get cut off because of flooding, and you’ll have to modify your plans. The colder months, June and July, are more suitable if you want dry weather, but anytime between April and October is perfect.
• Estimated Travel Time: Allow anywhere between four and eight days to drive the route. Those short on time pick a four-day itinerary that doesn’t include many stops. To thoroughly experience the way, follow the eight-day itinerary.
• What To Bring: The sealed road doesn’t require a 4WD, but there are some off-road tracks you can take if you do decide to go with your 4WD. Pack a variety of clothes and shoes as you’ll be going from the beach to the bush. Check your spare tire and pack a first aid kit. Fuel stations are rarely more than 200km apart, so no need to carry extra fuel.

Townsville to Charters Towers

Overlanders Way starts at the charming coastal town of Townsville, whose main highlight is the Great Barrier Reef. Go diving or snorkel to witness some vivid sea life. For those not fans of snorkelling, there’s the Reef Aquarium. Visit the Turtle Hospital, an outstanding educational experience, especially if you’re travelling with youngsters. A short ferry ride can take you to Magnetic Island to visit the National Park beaming with wildlife. Take the Forts Walk to see Northern Australia’s largest colony of wild koalas.

Take off from Townsville, and you’ll reach Charters Towers in 137km, right in time to settle for the night.

Charters Towers to Hughenden

It had 29 gold crushing mills, and you can visit some of them today. This former gold mining town is now a serene spot radiating narratives of the past on every corner of the city centre, known as One Square Mile. Take the Ghosts of Gold Heritage Trail tour to learn fascinating details of Charter Towers’ previous life. Visit Leahton Park to see the largest purebred herd of Texas longhorn cattle in Australia.

Get back on the road, and in 248km, you’ll reach Hughenden. If you got on the road with a 4WD, take an exciting detour through White Mountains National Park, Sawpit Gorge and Poison Valley.

Hughenden to Richmond

Hughenden takes you even further back in history to the prehistoric era. This small town once sat on the shoreline of the great inland sea. Over the year, scientists excavated more than 3000 dinosaur and marine fossils in the area. Visit Flinders Discovery Centre to see the life-sized replica of Hughie – the first whole Muttaburrasaurus skeleton found in Australia. You’ll be astonished by the size of these majestic mammals that once inhabited this region.

The colourful Australian Little Grand Canyon – Porcupine Gorge is just an hour out of Hughenden. The nearby creek contributed to carving out these towering sandstone cliffs into the landscape.

After you’re done exploring, get back on the road for an hour, and you’ll reach Richmond.

Richmond to Julia Creek

If you’re fascinated by dinosaurs, there are more dinosaur remnants on the Overlanders Way. The area is any aspiring paleontologist’s heaven. In Richmond, you’ll find the Kronosaurus Korner, an award-winning museum with a vast collection of fossil specimens unique to the region. The fossicking sites are fun for all ages!

Tour Lake Fred Tritton, where you can spend the day relaxing, swimming, fishing, or explore the nearby Bush Tucker Gardens. You will discover many local plants marked with their traditional purpose.

Your next stop is only 150km away, at Julia Creek.

Julia Creek to Cloncurry

Juia Creek is one of the best stargazing spots on the Overlanders Way. It gets especially crowded each April because of the Dirt’n’Dust Festival. The event involves various activities, including bull and horse riding, triathlon, and even mud diving! You can expect scenic outback sunsets, historical localities and unique picnic spots.

“At The Creek” is the local Visitors and Interpretive Centre where you can discover the tiny endangered marsupial Dunnart and learn about their preservation program. There are several public pools for a much-needed refreshment and even free bicycle rentals to explore the town.

An hour and a half away is Cloncurry, the birthplace of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Free: Terry Smoth Lookout Rest Area or Burke & Wills Memorial Corella River.

Cloncurry to Mount Isa

At Cloncurry, you will witness the reminders of one of the most important historical events – the flying medical service back in the 1920s. It was a crucial operation for the survival of the Outback. The John Flynn Place Museum and Art Gallery keep valuable pieces of history as well as the Cloncurry Unearthed Museum. This town was named after the expeditor Robert O’Hara Burke, and his water bottle is still preserved at the museum. If you’re a fan of all things aviation, visit the original Qantas hangar, from where the first passenger flew in 1922. At lunchtime, hit Chinaman Creek Dam for a relaxed picnic by the water.

The route takes you 120km onward through the mountains and Selwyn Ranges to the only town in Outback Queensland – Mount Isa.

Mount Isa to Camooweal

Mount Isa is the perfect symbiosis of history, nature and prosperous industry. The only town in the Outback is also the world’s largest single producer of copper, silver, lead and zinc. It’s often referred to as the mining capital of Queensland. Another vital industry branch is beef production.

Mount Isa is home to the southern hemisphere’s richest rodeo and a WW2 Underground Hospital. Take the Hard Times Mine Underground Tour to learn more about mining in the region, visit Outback Park, Mount Isa Riversleigh Fossil Centre, Mount Isa Fish Hatchery Project or walk the Ancient Outback Mount Isa loop. There’s so much to do in this region, so you might want to linger a day or two more.

And we’re nearing the last stretch of the Overlanders Way, 190km further is Camooweal.

Camooweal to Tennant Creek

The final stop in Queensland is Camooweal. Here you can visit the Dovers Camp Museum to find out more about Australia’s pastoral history. Go to Camooweal Caves National Park to see the 500 million-year-old sinkholes and the Nowranie Caves that are sadly not open for visitors. There are great lookouts near the caves where you can take in the panorama.

Many people taking the Overlanders Way might choose to end the journey at Camooweal, but I encourage you to make a stretch and drive 470km, leave Quenslaand and enter the Northern Territory at Tennant Creek.

At Tennant Creek, visit Kundjarra, the unique rock formations also known as Devil’s Marbles. Lake Mary Ann is a good midday stop; it’s beaming with wildlife and provides excellent shaded picnic spots. Finish the day at the Nyinkka Nyunyu Art & Culture Centre and learn more about the local Warumungu people’s culture.

A fair warning: the perfect mix of picturesque sites and adventure will have you longing to go back time after time!

Important Travel Tips

• Basic Road Info: The Great Ocean Road is a sealed, 243km long road with one lane in each direction and a speed limit ranging from 50km/h to 100km/h. It’s the largest war memorial, built by returned soldiers in 1932 and dedicated to those who gave their lives in World War I. As a major tourist attraction, it provides access to popular landmarks. In December last year, an act called “Great Ocean Road Environs Protection Act 2020” went into effect to legally protect the road.
• Best Travel Time: December to February is peak season, nature is in full bloom, and festivals are happening everywhere. But prepare for crowds and traffic jams. During winter, June to August precisely there are fewer crowds, it’s less expensive, and you can catch the whale migration. September to November, the weather is fine, waterfalls are flowing, nature is awakening. However, you can expect rainfall here and there.
• Estimated Travel Time: You can drive the Great Ocean Road in a day, but if you allow time to take in the scenic coastal views, visit the towns, wineries, and landmarks, it can take you anywhere between 3 days to a week. There’s so much to see!
• What To Bring: You’ll be driving on a sealed road, so a regular 2WD with a filled-up tank is all you need. Great Ocean Road passes by many towns where you can stock up on groceries, fuel, and other necessities. Bring your adventurous spirit and curiosity!
• Tickets and Permissions: Cape Otway Lightstation $10; Bass Strait Shell Museum $10; Apollo Bay Museum $5; Otway Fly Treetop Adventures $25-$120; Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village $19.

Takeoff, East to West – Torquay

If you’re starting from Melbourne, make sure to leave early. You’ll reach Torquay in 100km and then officially be on the Great Ocean Road or B100. Torquay is a surfers haven, full of surf shops and sublime beaches, including Bells Beach – the most popular one and host of the longest-running surfing contest in the world.

If you’re not keen on surfing, get back on the road to Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery for a sweet break. Stop for a moment at Loveridge or Eagle Rock Lookouts to take in some of the majestic coastal views.

Torquay To Lorne

Lorne is a friendly town filled with cafes, shops, and delicious local food. It’s a popular holiday destination for locals so plan your visit accordingly. Take a walk on the pristine beach, in the rainforest, or bike along the seashore. If you’re up for a challenge, pack a lunch and visit Cumberland Falls, just be aware the hike is 9km long.

For an easier detour from Great Ocean Road, leave your car, and do the 30-minute steep climb to Teddy’s Lookout right outside Lorne. You’ll be rewarded with two lookouts – Otway Ranges Lookout and St George River Lookout

Lorne To Apollo Bay

Wake up early and head to Apollo Bay. This is another popular stop along the road offering the best of both worlds – a commercial centre, museums, pristine beaches, and scenic backdrops.

Check out the Cape Otway Lightstation, where you can spot some wallabies, and the Old Cable Station Museum, which was the only connection between Tasmania and Australia in the past. The Bass Strait Shell Museum keeps some interesting marine life species.

Hit up some of the lookouts to enjoy a scenic sunset. Marriner Lookout is at the end of town on Marriners Lookout Road or Evans Lookout, a couple of kilometres inland from Skenes Creek.

Great Otway National Park

Prepare to get lost exploring the magnificent Otway National Park. Start the morning by walking in the Californian Redwoods forest, settled along the Aire River. These trees were planted in 1939 and now reach up to 60 metres in height!

Check out Hopetown Falls, just a short walk from the Redwoods. You can admire the falls from the platform or walk down to the base. If you like chasing waterfalls, go to Beauchamp Falls next. These 20-metre tall waterfalls rest beside the lush ferns and the mystic rainforest.

For the bold souls, there is Otway Fly Treetop Adventures. They provide a 600-metre long treetop walk at 47 metres height or a zip line tour over the Otway forest.

The Twelve Apostles

Less than an hour’s drive from Otway National Park will take you to our next stop – the Twelve Apostles. Best to be visited in the early morning to avoid the crowds and you might even get the place to yourself.

The magnificent limestone stacks rise 45 metres above the sea and are one of the most breathtaking sceneries imaginable. Today there are only eight left and even those standing will slowly vanish due to natural erosion. It’s best to stop by on a clear day, and don’t pass them by – next time you’re around there might be even less! Walk the boardwalks around the cliff tops and take in the view from different perspectives.

Drop back later in the day to catch the sun going down behind the apostles.

Port Campbell

Port Campbell is a colorful little town that holds a rich history. Nearby is the Loch Ard Gorge – the site where a terrible shipwreck happened in 1878. Only two passengers managed to reach the beach and survive the wreck. London Bridge is another epic landmark, a limestone stack formed by a gradual erosion process. Up until 1990, it created a whole double-span natural bridge.

The Arch is another natural rock formation in the shape of an arch with waves crashing below. The Grotto, a scenic hollowed put cave, is settled just outside Port Campbell. Just a short walk down the wooden stairs will take you to this fantastic photography location. It’s best to visit it at low tide and expect to get misted by the waves crashing into the rocks.

Enjoy the sunset at Port Campbell Jetty.

Port Campbell To Warrnambool

The official end of the Great Ocean Road is at Allansford, where you can stop for a yummy cheese tasting at the Cheese World and Museum. Or pick some food and go for a picnic at the Hopkins Falls.

Continue to Warrnambool to relax on Bathing Beach, which runs in front of the immense Lake Pertobe Adventure Park. For a piece of history, visit the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, which holds an impressive shipwreck collection.

As a perfect end of your road trip, spend the afternoon at Logans Beach Whale Watching Platform. If you’re visiting during whale migration season, it’s a sight you can’t miss!

Important Travel Tips

• Basic Road Info: Gibb River Road was formerly a cattle route; it’s mostly gravel with some rock parts. It is 660km long, starting at Derby and ending at Kunnunura or vice versa. It takes you through the untouched wilderness of Western Australia.
• Best Travel Time: The best season for taking the Gibb River Road is April to October. June and July are perfect, but the road and campsites can get packed. If you’re looking to escape the crowds and don’t mind a little rain, April and October are good months.
• Estimated Travel Time: You can make the trip in less than 10 days if you decide to stay on track and visit only the locations close to the road. There’s so much to be seen with slight detours, so plan at least 12-14 days.
• What To Bring: 4WD and an experienced driver are a must. Forget camp trailers and caravans. Specialized off-road caravans are fine. There are strategically placed roadhouses along the road, but bring a fuel canister just in case. Spare tires are a must.
• Tickets And Permissions: You need Kimberley National Parks permits for the following: Mirima National Park, King Leopold Range Conservation Park (including Bell Gorge), Tunnel Creek National Park, Windjana Gorge National Park.
  Or get unlimited entry to all WA parks for 12 months, at $92 per vehicle.
  Manning Gorge entry is $22.50 per person with camping. El Questro and Emma Gorge – you need 7 days Wilderness Park permit for $22 per person or a day permit for $12. Entry Permit to travel through Aboriginal Land is free, but the Kalumburu Recreation Entry Permit, the “Yellow Tourist Permit,” costs $50 per vehicle.

Part 1 – Kununurra To El Questro

Kununurra is the east starting point of the Gibb River Road and an entrance to Western Australia’s wilderness. Founded in 1961, Kununurra means “black soil” in the local Aboriginal dialect. It’s a young town and one of the three towns in the Kimberley with over 2,000 residents. Do your last-minute shopping here.

Take a moment to admire the rich birdlife, striking landscapes, superb waterways, and vast farmland around the town. Take a walk to the Emma Gorge, visit Mirima National Park, go to Ord River Dam, or climb to Kelly’s Knob Lookout for a phenomenal sunset.
Get on Gibb River Road and continue west to El Questro Wilderness Park.

El Questro is a million-acre park in the heart of the Kimberley Region. It’s one part wilderness park and one part still working cattle station. Start the day by driving up Saddleback Ridge or take a short walk through the pre-historic forest for a soak in the thermal pools at Zebedee Springs.

Unmissable El Questro highlights are the magnificent Cockburn Ranges and the Chamberlain Gorge. Take a tour to Explosion Gorge and Branco’s Lookout and take in the splendid panoramic view of the wilderness.

Head next to El Questro’s direct rival – Home Valley Station. This three-million-acre haven – part cattle station rests at the foot of the dramatic Cockburn Range. It provides every type of accommodation and a plethora of activities. Hit the walking tracks, dive in the ancient gorges and rock pools. Or try your luck fishing barramundi in the Pentecost River.
End the day by watching the sunset over the Cockburn Ranges.

You can choose between bush or homestead stay and enjoy a night in the bar and restaurant.

Part 5 – Drysdale River Station

Start the day by taking off to Drysdale River National Park, where you get to admire the pure wilderness. Walk around open woods, dive in gorges, rock pools, and creeks of the Drysdale River. You’ll find two large waterfalls, Morgan Falls and Solea Falls, and many smaller ones along the river.
Over 600 species of rare plants, from aquatic and swamp varieties to ferns, fan palms, Kalumbaru gums, and paperbarks, can be found along the river bank. Get back to Drysdale River Station for much-deserved rest.

Part 6 – Drysdale River Station To Mitchell Falls

Head early and dive to Mitchell Falls campground and car park. Decide whether you’re up for a moderate to difficult hike to Mitchell Falls or prefer a helicopter ride from Mitchell Plateau. The walk is a picturesque sight, with aboriginal art and swimming stops along the way.
Mitchell Falls is a four-tiered, 80-metre-drop waterfall on the red rocks, with sensational native fauna and flora that will have you captivated for hours. The ride is challenging, so ensure spare tires.

If you would splurge on one paid camp for the whole Gibb River Road, let that be Mitchell Falls. Location wise it’s perfect for you to rest and get a jump start the following day!

Part 7 – Mitchell Falls To Manning Gorge

Leave Mitchell Falls and get back on the Gibb River Road to another impressive water body, Manning Gorge. Set up at the huge campground with plenty of shade and take the 30-minute walk to the gorge. It can be the highlight of your trip! You’re surrounded by amazing scenery, crystal clear water, and a small waterfall if you’re visiting right after the wet season.

If you don’t feel like walking, there’s a lovely little water hole close to the campground.

Part 8 – Manning Gorge To Bell Gorge

After a peaceful night at the Manning Gorge, drive 90 kilometres to Bell Gorge. It’s rated as one of the most spectacular attractions in the Kimberley. Bell Gorge features a cascading 100-metre waterfall, rock pools, and incredible cliff-top views. It’s a serene sight with fantastic nature. Just a short walk takes you to the higher and lower pool. The water in the higher pool is warmer but shallow. The lower pool is deeper and more refreshing.

Part 9 – Bell Gorge To Windjana Gorge National Park

Take off from Bell Gorge and drive 126 kilometres to Windjana Gorge National Park. The park is settled in the Napier Ranges, a 50 million-year-old coral reef that is now a mountain range. Take a walk around the astonishingly tall walls covered with fossils, up to Tunnel Creek National Park, the oldest cave system in Western Australia.

You can take a torch-lit walk through the 750-metre tunnel, a natural habitat of bats and freshwater crocodiles. Wear suitable shoes; you’ll be walking in the water!

Head back to Windjana Gorge National Park to spend the night.

Part 10 – Windjana Gorge National Park

Get up early and take a walk to the Windjana Gorge for phenomenal views. You’ll find over 50 freshwater crocodiles basking in the sun on the shore. As you might guess, swimming here is not recommended. The crocodiles are generally more afraid of you than you are of them, but they can give you a harmful bite if aggravated, so keep your distance and don’t disturb them.

Rest and prepare for the final stretch of your road trip.

Part 11 – Windjana Gorge National Park To Derby

Take off from Windjana Gorge National Park, and just after 8 kilometres, you’ll come across a sealed road. The road to Derby is 146 kilometres long, but the official end of Gibb River Road comes at 119 kilometres.
Derby, along with Kununurra and Broome, is one of the three towns with over 2,000 people. It also has the highest tides in Australia, with the difference between low and high tide stretching 11.8 metres.

The Boab Prison Tree and Wharfinger’s House Museum are reminders of the region’s colonial and convict past. You can already sense that you’re going back to civilization with the sight of The Royal Flying Doctor Base and the Kimberley School of the Air.

Choose from local station stays and camping options to spend an extra night and go on a half-day trip to the world’s only Horizontal Waterfalls and the 1,000 islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago.

Part 12 – Derby To Broome

Driving out of Derby, take the National Highway and head off to Broome. You’ll be driving on a sealed road, so it will take you around two and a half hours to pass the 222 kilometres.

Broome is a seaside town full of rich history and a vivid alfresco lifestyle. This town offers experiences and attractions for all tastes. Take a tour around town, witness the dinosaur footprints, or admire the red rock formations at Gantheaume Point.

The beach in Broome is straight out of a postcard – the red rocks and turquoise water seem like the place where fire meets ice.

As a wholesome end of the day and your Gibb River Road Trip, take a sunset camel ride.

1. Grand Pacific Drive, New South Wales

Grand Pacific Drive is a 140km scenic ocean drive passing by several small towns that serve as notable breakpoints. Although it’s shorter than most of that ‘epic’ roads you’ll take on your Big Lap road trip, it’s filled with unforgettable highlights and breathtaking views. It serves as a great starting point if you happen to live near Sydney, and takes you all the way to Jervis Bay.

Grand Pacific Drive starts at Royal National Park, less than an hour south of Sydney and takes you to the Bald Hill Lookout, a great scene and popular paragliding place. 5. Eyre Peninsula Road, South Australia

If you’ve ever heard anyone saying they’re crossing the Nullabor (with the exception of the movie Australia, of course!), they’re actually driving the Eyre Highway. This road is known as the longest straight road in Australia and will take you from Perth to Adelaide by passing through the Eyre Peninsula’s top.

Ever feel like driving around to clear your mind? Well, the first part of this road can offer you a straight drive into the middle of nowhere.

7. Gibb River Road, West Australia

Buckle up for the greatest 4WD adventure on your Big Lap – The Gibb River Road! Located in the heart of the Kimberley, this gravel road is 660km long, stretching from Derby to Wyndham.

The Gibb River Road is an instant adrenaline spike and a challenge for the not as experienced drivers. Due to the road’s state, the days required to pass it are somewhere between a week and a half. Stoping to take a dip in the waterfall-supplied rock pools is a must.

8. 75 Mile Beach Road, Queensland

Continue your 4WD adventure on Fraser Island, hitting the iconic coastal drive – the 75-mile highway. Rated as one of the world’s best coastal drives, this road is a sandy adventure for the bold.

Enjoy the sea view and salty air while cruising at 80km per hour on the sand along the coastline of the world’s largest sand island. Make sure to check the right time when to pass through the 75-mile highway since you must avoid high tide.

The sand is unpredictable; there could be some bumps and dunes, so take caution while driving and respect the speed limit. Although the ocean is pretty close, swimming isn’t considered safe, so it’s best to avoid it.

9. The Coral Coast Highway, Western Australia

The Coral Coast highway is 1,250km long, starting at Perth all the way to Exmouth. It’s an impressive picturesque drive through the Pinnacles Desert and World Heritage sites that are Shark Bay and the Ningaloo Reef.

10. The Great Eastern Drive, Tasmania

The Great Eastern Drive follows Tasmania’s east coast, starting at Orford and ending at St Helen’s. The ride is 176km long and takes you through some of Tasmania’s most remarkable sites, like the Bay of Fires and Freycinet National Park.

Call it a day and hit some of the pristine beaches along the road, spend untracked time in the turquoise waters, visit some of the vineyards, or take a detour exploring nature.

Fraser Island is ideal for camping and this more relaxed style of holidaying offers freedom and a choice of a number of public and private camping grounds.

However, you must first obtain a permit from the Department of Environment and Resource Management. Fraser Island has seven main camping areas, five of which are managed by the Department, the other two are operated privately.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) manages a number of formal campgrounds, informal beach camping zones and walkers’ camps. Camping permits are required and fees apply.

The more developed camping areas are located at Central Stations, Lake McKenzie, Lake Boomanjin, Waady Point, Dundubara and Wathumba.

These camping areas generally feature basic facilities including showers, toilets, BBQs, picnic tables and limited wood supplies however it is advisable to bring your own non-wood stove as wood is not always available. Please don’t bring your own firewood as these many introduce pests to the island.

The commercial camping grounds, on the other hand, are located at Cathedral Beach and Dilli Village and usually have similar toilets, shower, BBQ and freshwater facilities.

Beach camping is also permitted at undeveloped sites in some locations on the west coast and along Fraser’s east coast. However there are some locations where camping is completely prohibited such as Eli Creek, but these areas are generally well marked.

Camping along the eastern beaches offers more privacy and a sense of adventure however permits are still required. Visitors may camp anywhere along the beach where campsites and vehicle access exists. Whilst all beach campsites are set behind the dunes, driving over the sand dunes or through vegetation is not permitted where no track exists.

The unassuming beachside town of Agnes Water doesn’t look that special from the outset. The popular backpacker stop between Queensland’s Fraser Island and the Whitsundays is quaint and homely and looks like any other Australian coastal town.

But it’s definitely worth a look and I was pretty enamored with the place by the time I left.

Agnes Waters is a six-hour drive from the Queensland capital of Brisbane but it’s pretty much highway driving all the way – and Gympie and Bundaberg are good pit stops on the road trip. On arriving into Agnes Waters, it didn’t take long to find out it’s about £10 for a two-hour group surfing lesson and I put my name down promptly for the next day’s lesson. 

Agnes Waters Beach is a worthy stop in its own right with kilometers of soft sand and it’s a great place for a swim, walk or sunbake.

The Reef2Beach crew leads you through the basics first – helping you figure out which foot will lead, how to stand up, how to fall so you don’t hurt yourself and carrying your board. All equipment is provided, including a sun shirt – but you’ll need to bring sunscreen and a towel.

There are multiple ways to view the horsetail-shaped cascade of Wallaman Falls, fed by Stony Creek making its way over the Atherton Tableland. Stand at the precipice of the gorge to view this incredible natural wonder at the easily accessible Wallaman Falls lookout.

To get up close to the massive falls, take the Djyinda Walk (3.2 km) that traverses the side of the cliff to the base of the falls. Listen to the roar of the torrents of water that fall into a 20-meter (60 ft) pool at the bottom of the gorge. If you’re lucky, a rainbow may appear in the mist when you stand at the bottom of the gorge and look up toward the sky!
