3. Howard Smith Wharves

With its excellent location and eateries, the Howard Smith Wharves is booming in popularity. Located on the Brisbane River, beneath the Story Bridge, the views are star quality. There’s a bustling, community feel to the area, and you’re guaranteed an excellent Sunday session.

4. King Island

Walk on water at this unique location in Brisbane’s Redlands Coast. Start your day at Wellington Point and when the tide is low, walk along the sand bank to the small, inhabited island. Family friendly and dog friendly, it’s a popular walking spot at just 2km return. Best time to visit? Sunrise and sunset make for a special memory at this locally known location.

5. South Bank

No Brisbane list would be complete without a mention of South Bank. Boasting Australia’s only man-made, inner city beach, South Bank is quite rightly the talk of the town. Home to an array of restaurants, walking paths and picnic spots, it’s our top place to recommend for a family day out. Additionally, it’s also the art and cultural hub of Brisbane. There you’ll find, Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Museum and State Library of Queensland.

6. Eat Street

If you’re looking for a fun night out and you’re a foodie, look no further! Eat Street Northshore is a vibrant venue selling international street food and alcohol along with live music performances. Entry costs just $5, so go take a visit. Your taste buds will thank you, trust us. 

7. Daisy Hill Koala Sanctuary

Situated just a short drive out of Brisbane, the Daisy Hill Koala Sanctuary is a wonderful education centre. Rescuing and rehabilitating koalas, the mission of the sanctuary is to educate and inform visitors. Situated on a peaceful day use area, it makes for a perfect picnic spot. Spot wild wallabies as you walk along one of the many trails found in the area. Admission to the centre is free. 

8. New Farm Park

One of Brisbane’s oldest parks, you’ll find this place come alive on weekends with local families gathering for a picnic. At just a minutes’ drive from the CBD, it’s easily accessible and is the perfect place to relax in the city. Walk amongst the flower beds and enjoy the impressive vantage point of Brisbane CBD.

9. Paddington

Discover the quirky suburb of Paddington in Brisbane’s west. With panoramic views of the city, it’s become a much sought-after real estate hot spot. Along with its city skyline views, Paddington is home to incredible antique stores, unique recycled shops and a host of eco-friendly independent stores.

10. Brisbane Vegan Markets

Found in the suburb of West End, this marketplace is Brisbane’s first monthly wholly vegan market. Offering a wide range of vegan goodies and delicious treats, its growing popularity is no surprise. Running twice a month, make sure you plan an early visit. Crowds flock and line the street to sample some of Brisbane’s best plant-based dishes.

11. Citylink Cycleway

Brisbane is proud to boast an extensive cycleway throughout the city, making eco travel easier than ever. Cycle stations are prominent throughout the city so there’s no need to worry about providing your own bike. Spend a day exploring the city by pedal and if you’re thrifty you can do it for free! Hire a bike for less than 30 minutes and there’s no charge. Simply swap your bike at the next station and you’re good to go. 

12. Netherworld

Release your inner child at Netherworld and enjoy their numerous pinball machines, board games and arcade. Additionally, you can grab a drink and a bite to eat and make a meal out of it. Another great place for plant-based lovers, their menu is 100% vegan! Customers can choose to add meat and dairy if they wish.

13. Mt Gravatt

Another must-do is Mt Gravatt lookout. Giving Mt Coot-tha a run for its money, this lookout spot is pretty hard to beat. Famous with the locals, small crowds gather to watch the sunset after cycling, hiking or driving to its summit.

14. Jacaranda Trail

If you’re lucky enough to visit Brisbane in Jacaranda season (October/November) then you’re in for a treat. The city comes alive with colour as the purple flowers bloom. Though they are native to Brazil, they have become Brisbane’s iconic tree. Grab your camera and capture the city at its most beautiful. 

15. Kangaroo Point

Whether you want to kayak the Brisbane River or hike the Story Bridge, Kangaroo Point has it all. Home for the adventurous, there’s an array of activities to do within this famous suburb. If you’re wanting something a little more down to earth, then simply take a walk along the riverside, it’ll impress you just as much.

16. Rooftop Bars

Brisbane is home to many things and rooftop bars are one of them. Dotted around the city there’s multiple bars to choose from, some of which even contain pools. Live your best life and enjoy a cool down cocktail as you soak up the skyline views.

Start Your Morning At King Island

King Island for many is a highlight of their visit to the Redlands Coast. Located in Wellington Point, King Island is a small island situated 1km from land. What’s special about it? Well, you can only access the island at low tide, otherwise the sand bank is underwater. Timing is everything when visiting this island. Most visitors try to arrange their visit for sunrise or sunset when the tide is low as it makes for a spectacular viewing spot. It’s also a popular dog walking location. The island itself has a short path through the middle and you’re able to look back towards the coast. It’s a nice spot to sit and relax but make sure you don’t miss the tide, otherwise you’ll be waiting a while to walk the 1km back to the coast.

Accessible by the same car park in Wellington Point as King Island, it’s also worth visiting Wellington Point Jetty. It’s a fairly nice lookout spot but the real draw is its location. If you’re an early riser then it’s a fantastic place for sunrise photography.

Breakfast In Manly

The bayside suburb of Manly is a great stop to find a good breakfast. There’s a decent selection of cafes to choose from. If you’re looking for a view with breakfast then head to the esplanade and it shouldn’t be too long before you find a café of choice. Otherwise, there are also eateries situated on the parallel streets, including Bare Naked Bowls and Cambridge Lane Espresso + Kitchen.

Walk breakfast off by taking a stroll along Manly harbour. Here you can watch punters race remote-controlled boats and browse the dozens of boats moored in the harbour. If you’re visiting on a Sunday, you’re in luck as the Manly Creative Markets will be on too.

View The Famous Wynnum Wading Pool

North of Manly you’ll come across the suburb of Wynnum. This coastal spot has a fantastic esplanade; it can get busy on the weekends with families and walkers enjoying a brisk walk with the coastal views. There is also the Wynnum Jetty to walk along, a popular fishing spot. Alternatively, the area is well known for its large oval-shaped wading pool. Opened to the public in 1933, the tidal pool is a great place for children to play, safely, in the water.

Enjoy Wine Tasting At Sirromet Wines

Located inland on Mount Cotton, Sirromet Wines is a family-run winery. Running tours, tasting sessions, weddings and outdoor live music dining. In the past, it has hosted famous musicians and the grounds are spectacular. There is a lagoon and a lavender field situated on the property. There are a number of experiences on offer, including picnicking within the lavender fields or a 30-minute wine tasting session. It’s extremely affordable too, at just $5 per person for the wine tasting.

Spot Wildlife On The Eddie Santagiuliana Way Nature Walk

Great by foot or cycle, the Eddie Santagiuliana Way walk is a picturesque trail stretching 8kms. A mix of boardwalk and concrete paths, it’s a leisurely walk, suitable for most. Spot wetlands, creeks, mangroves and bushland. The highlight of this trail though is that you’re likely to spot a koala in the branches above, as well as numerous birds. It’s a wildlife lover’s dream.

Step Back In Time At Ormiston House

One of Redlands Coast’s best-loved historic treasures, the beautiful homestead overlooks Moreton Bay. Built between 1858 and 1865, it has been carefully restored over the years to allow visitors to embrace one of Queensland’s finest examples of colonial architecture. It is open to the public on Sundays between midday and 4pm and is entirely run by volunteers, who are enthusiastic to talk to the public about the history of the house and its grounds.

Catch The Sunest At Cleveland Point Lighthouse

Cleveland Point Light, also known as Point Cleveland Light, is a lighthouse located on the north-eastern tip of Cleveland Point. The lighthouse overlooks Moreton Bay to the east and Raby Bay to the west. If you’re visiting, pack a blanket and a picnic, it’s a great location to sit in the afternoon sun and watch the sun go down over the horizon. Not only is it a great sunset location but the lighthouse itself has an interesting history. It’s the second lighthouse to stand there, built in 1865 and it’s unusual due to the hexagonal frame, rather than the traditional round. Also, don’t fret if you forgot to pack food. The locally loved Lighthouse Restaurant is across the carpark, offering spectacular ocean dining views and fish ‘n’ chip takeaways.

What You Need To Know Before Your Visit

Where Exactly Can You Find Paronella Park?

Paronella Park doesn’t exactly have the most obvious location – it’s definitely hidden away. Technically, it’s located in Mena Creek, which isn’t exactly very well known to anyone (unless you’re a local). That said, there are signs on the Bruce Highway that point it out. Coming from Cairns, the drive is about 120km south or if you’re coming from Townsville, it’s about 280km north.

Where Can You Stay?

Now that you know where to find Paronella Park, you might be wondering where you can stay. Well, you’re actually in luck! Paronella Park has onsite accommodation options to suit everyone. If camping isn’t your style or you’re looking to splurge for a few nights, there are six cabins available at Paronella Park. There are also onsite campgrounds that are suitable for tents, camper trailers and caravans. But, be aware that onsite accommodation generally books out fast, so make sure you get in quick and have a few back-up options in case.

If you can’t get into any of the accommodation options at the park, don’t despair, because there are a bunch of other places to consider. Mena Creek Hotel is just 200m from Paronella Park and offers a range of room sizes for you to choose from, as well as free onsite parking.

Alternatively, for caravan parks, you can head a little further north to Innisfail. August Moon Caravan Park and Etty Bay Cabins & Caravan Park are just two options to consider – both are located in south Innisfail, so there won’t be too much of a drive to Paronella Park.

Pricing

One last piece of important information for you to keep in mind before you visit Paronella Park is the costs involved. While this shouldn’t affect your decision to go, because obviously it’s worth it in the end, you do still need to factor this in. Pricing for onsite accommodation varies depending on how long you’re staying and whether you’re visiting during peak periods – so keep this in mind when you’re planning your trip. 

As for the tickets to the park, they cost $50 for adults, and $28 for children aged 5-15. These tickets give you access to the whole park for as long as you choose to stay. And remember, if you sign up to be a Livin’ Barry member, you’ll get 10% off your ticket, bringing the price down to $45 (for an adult ticket).

History Of The Park

Humble Beginnings

Paronella Park is the product of the vision of a Spanish man by the name of Jose Paronella. He arrived in Australia from Catalonia in 1913 initially working on sugar cane farms. After returning to Spain to marry Margarita, the newlyweds returned to Australia in 1925 for their honeymoon. It was during this second trip that Jose made the choice to purchase the land in Mena Creek that he’d seen last time he was in Australia. He wanted to build something that could provide entertainment to his guests and the public, and so, the construction of the park began.

Jose’s first job was to construct the “Grand Staircase” to facilitate easier transportation of building materials between the lower and upper levels. Jose and Margarita then had a cottage hand-built from stone, which later became their new home. They then set to work constructing the entertainment area – a ballroom that became a movie theatre on the weekends.

Opening Of The Park

A hydro electric plant was also installed to power the whole park. From 1935, the park opened to the public with Jose and Margarita welcoming guests to play tennis, watch movies and dance the night away at the ballroom.

From Jose’s Death To The Present

After Jose’s death in 1948, his son and daughter continued their father’s dream, despite how natural disasters caused damage to multiple structures in the park. By 1993, the park was purchased by the current owners, who set to work repairing the park to reopen it to the public and restore Jose’s dream.

Things To Do At The Park

So now you’ve heard about the fascinating story behind the park’s origins, let’s highlight what you definitely need to check out while you’re there.

What To See

• The Grand Staircase
• Jose and Margarita’s cottage
• The ballroom/ movie theatre
• The castle
• The old toilet block

These are just some of the old ruins you will see that have been restored and remain open to the public. While you cannot properly see the hydro electric plant, it has also been restored and the park now runs entirely off the power produced by it. About the Sculptor

Jason deCaires Taylor is a British sculptor, marine conservationist, underwater photographer and scuba diving instructor. His rich experience helped him climb the ladder and become a world-famous underwater sculptor. His portfolio includes thriving underwater museums in Cancun, Lanzarote and the Bahamas, as well as several smaller ones in London, Maldives and Indonesia. Taylor is the first contemporary artist who uses art to point out the importance of marine life conservation. Collaborating with marine biologists, he learned about the materials and types of sculptures required to help preserve marine life. He uses resilient, stable and environmentally safe materials, coral promoting neutral pH cement. Broken coral fragments are propagated and planted into the sculptures.

He’s currently developing a new project in Cannes, France.

The Importance of The Museum of Underwater Art

The Museum of Underwater Art is a two parts installation; the ‘Coral Greenhouse’ and the ‘Ocean Siren’. The main goal of the installations is reef conservation and restoration. The Great Barrier Reef is under more and more significant threats every year, and while there are several protection programs, global climate change has an enormous impact.

Submerging shipwrecks are an age-old practice used for creating amazing diving spots as well as new marine life habitats. But it’s not a sustainable method due to the materials used in ship construction. After all, their purpose is far from being coral and turtles’ habitat.

The MOUA is not only a stunning art installation meant to draw in tourists, but also a new habitat for endangered species unique to the Great Barrier Reef. Underwater equipment follows the coral development as well as marine inhabitation inside the sculptures. The museum’s idea focuses on improving education opportunities for scientists, marine students and tourists. Besides educating the masses, they expect to raise awareness and provoke action.

How to Visit The Museum of Underwater Art

MOUA, the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, is made of two parts. The first one, Ocean Siren, is viewable from land at The Strand, Townsville beach foreshore.

The Ocean Siren is partially submerged, with its largest part standing tall in the ocean. The 5-metre tall sculpture is modelled after Wulgurukaba Traditional Owner Takoda Johnson. It reacts to water temperature changes and switches its colour according to the current temperature. The sculpture receives data from the Davies Reef weather station on the Great Barrier Reef. At night, however, the Ocean Siren is genuinely a jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring spectacle.

Next, we have the Coral Greenhouse, located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef at John Brewer Reef. It’s approximately 80km from Townsville or a 2-hour boat ride, weighs more than 58 tonnes and includes 20 reef guardians propagating coral. It expresses the story of the First Nations people, particularly the Manbarra and Wulgurukaba people, the Traditional Owners of this region of land and sea. You must book a dive or snorkel tour with one of the approved tourism operators to see the installation. The visibility ranges from 10 to 15 metres and depends on the weather conditions.

Here are the operators, their departing places and days:

• Adrenalin Snorkel & Dive – Townsville and Magnetic Island, every Thursday and Sunday
• Yongala Dive – Townsville and Magnetic Island, every Friday and Saturday
• Pro Dive Magnetic Island – commencing mid-2021
• Orpheus Island – Orpheus Island, on request

You can also book the mooring and visit the Coral Greenhouse with your own vessel. All you have to do is contact the museum as well as download the mooring information from their site.

Installations in Progress at the Museum of Underwater Art

The fascinating and innovative combination of art, science, culture and conservation doesn’t stop here. Besides the two installations already opened to the public, two more are on their way by the end of 2021.

Palm Island is the largest island of the Great Palm Group, located 65km northwest of Townsville. It’s home to the third sculpture, which will showcase the connection between the Indigenous culture and the reef. The concept revolves around the Palm Island community, the Traditional Owners and their cultural approach to the land and sea.

Magnetic Island is the final division of the underwater museum, and you can expect more information soon.

Support The Museum of Underwater Art

There are several ways you can help to preserve the Great Barrier Reef. Lower your carbon footprint, recycle, use coral-safe SPF and lead a more sustainable life. The MOUA offers you the chance to participate in its mission directly. Make a direct impact by choosing some of the activities the museum offers.

Adopt a coral

You can help expand the coral garden at the second installation of the MOUA by adopting a coral. Often, small pieces of the reef will break off and fall on the bottom of the lagoon. The sandy bottom is not suitable for them, in addition, they will die if nobody replants them. The museum picks up the broken pieces and replants them into the sculptures. If you choose to adopt a coral, the museum will plant it at the Coral Greenhouse; you’ll receive a certificate of completion of your adoption and a photo.

The minimum donation is $500.

Join a coral gardening expedition

How about planting a coral yourself? If you’re an avid, certified diver, for example, you can join a planting expedition. You’ll get to plant your own corals and see the entire process first-hand. This program will be available soon.

1. SS Yongala

SS Yongala is a 110-metre long ship that sank in 1911, but it was discovered half a century later. It’s a fascinating dive, mainly because it’s the largest and most intact shipwreck in Australia. Today it lays between Townsville and Ayr, near Cape Bowling Green. It’s reachable by a 90-minute boat ride from Townsville or 12 nautical miles from Alva Beach.

Since it sank so long ago, it has become an artificial reef, populated by hundreds of species of sea life. Sea snakes, turtles, eagle rays, Queensland groupers, barracuda, trevally, cobia and colourful corals are just some of them. It’s around 30 metres deep; therefore, it’s suitable for advanced divers.

2. Tangalooma Wrecks

The Tangalooma Wrecks are widely popular because you can spot them even without entering the sea. Merely 15 minutes away from the beach at Tangalooma Resort on Moreton Island lie 17 deliberately sunk vessels. They were artificially sunk to create an exciting diving spot and act as a break wall for small boats. It’s an easily accessible shipwreck dive and suitable for beginners. The wrecks are a short swim away from the shore but be aware of the currents. Even though the wrecks are only 2 to 10 metres deep, they’re still an attractive habitat of unique sea life, including wobbegongs, trevally, kingfish, yellowtail and a variety of tropical fish.

3. Barcoola

The vivid coastal town of 1770 has a couple of mesmerizing shipwrecks along its coastline. Barcoola is one of them, a steel fishing trawler that sank in the 1990s. It lies 44 metres underwater, and it’s suitable for experienced divers only. Vast schools of fish circulate the boat, and as you approach, you might not even see it! Onboard the ship lives diverse marine life, including kingfish, cod, rays, giant cobia, and grouper. If you’re lucky, you might encounter a bull shark or bronze whaler.

4. HMAS Tobruk

Moving on to a new shipwreck, the HMAS Tobruk is a 127-metre long ship that sank in 2018. No worries, nothing wrong happened; it was retired in 2015. It was deliberately dropped near Great Sandy Marine Park to create an exciting new diving spot. It’s a year-round diving spot hence the warm waters.

HMAS Tobruk starts at 11 metres underwater, making it suitable for beginners, but experienced divers will find it interesting too since it stretches up to 30 metres below. Even though it’s recently sunk, plenty of marine life has settled around it. You can swim 100 metres inside the boat to meet them up close! If you’re in the right season, you might be surprised by migrating humpback whales!

5. Ex-HMAS Brisbane

Another deliberately submerged ship is the Ex-HMAS Brisbane, a former Royal Australian Navy warship. It operated until 2001 and was sunk in 2005. Notwithstanding the name, the ship is not located near Brisbane but on the Sunshine Coast, between Maroochydore and Mooloolaba. Lying at 28 metres underwater, it’s suitable for advanced divers.

The artificial reef accommodates a wide array of sea life ranging from clownfish, lionfish, blue and green wrasse, baitfish, scorpionfish to octopus, flathead, hermit crabs, leopard shark, shovelnose and bull rays.

6. Cetacea

The coastline of Seventeen Seventy hides another magnificent shipwreck, the 13-metre long Cetacea. The fishing trawler sank to the sandy bottom in 1992 and today lies 32 metres underwater. It’s an excellent habitat for soft coral, sponges and algae. Cetacea is home to Queensland groper, estuary cod, bull and leopard rays, tuna and large cobia.

7. The Singapore

The Singapore was a mountainous 87 metres long, 10 metres wide single screw steamer. It was bound to sail from Hong Kong to Sydney, but it suffered an accident by hitting Singapore rock right offshore in the late 1877s. Luckily, everyone survived, although the boat sunk. Despite the gigantic size, it was just recently discovered, and you get to be among the first generation of divers visiting it. The area around the wreck is a Marine Park Green Zone full of vivid sea life. Get face to face with numerous turtles, fishes and beautiful coral. It’s located right off Singapore Bay, on Keswick Island.

8. Scottish Prince Wreck

Located on the Gold Coast only 800 metres offshore lies The Scottish Prince – a 64-metre long iron ship. In 1887, the ship was sailing from Scotland to Brisbane, carrying mixed cargo including whiskey, linen and mousetraps. It suffered a terrible accident with only the hull of the boat remaining intact.

Today it’s a diving site protected under the Commonwealth Historic Shipwrecks Act, covered in soft corals, sponges, and full of marine life. You can see wobbegong sharks, shovelnose rays, brown-banded catsharks and crayfish.

9. RMS Quetta

The RMS Quetta is one of Australia’s biggest tragedies, where 134 people lost their lives. It was a 120-metre long passenger and cargo boat that was sailing from Brisbane to London. After hitting a coral mount near the Torres Strait Islands, it quickly sank.

Today it’s one of the best dives but not often visited. It’s still mostly intact, making it a great exploration dive. Plenty of lush corals cover the boat, and various fish species circle it. Turtles, stingrays, sharks, eagle rays, batfish, trevally, snapper and barracuda, are just a tiny part of what you can see on site.

10. Lady Bowen

The mighty Lady Bowen was a 66-metre long boat that sank in 1894. After crashing into Kennedy Shoal, it sailed for 48 kilometres more and eventually sank off the coast of Mission Beach.

Today it lies 34 metres underwater, and keeping in mind its age; it’s an established marine habitat. From colourful corals to sea snakes, giant turtles, sharks, rays and lionfish, you’ll be amazed at what this dive offers.

11. St Paul

Saint Paul was a steamer that sank in 1914 after hitting Smiths Rock, right off Moreton Island. The wreck happened close to the Titanic time, and it remains a mystery why the ship that was sailing in good conditions failed and hit the rock. Today it lies upwards, 1 km south of Smiths Rock. It’s one of the most challenging dives in Queensland since it lies 38 to 42 metres underwater. The remnants are amusing, not notably intact but still a fantastic sight full of marine life. It lies at an exposed part of the sea, so early dives are best.

12. Severance

Many boats have suffered their worst at the Southern Great Barrier Reef near Lady Elliot Island, but Severance is the only one you can dive. It was a sailing boat that sank in 1998, remaining fully intact. Today it lies 21 metres underwater. Despite the wreck being relatively new, the marine life populating it is wildly rich. You’ll encounter striking soft corals, various fish, stingrays, turtles, reef sharks, moray eel, wobbegongs and lots of shrimps!

13. The Llewellyn

The Llewellyn was a 34-metre long single screw coastal steamer. It was on route from Rockhampton to Bowen on what would be its last sail in 1919 when it sank because of heavy storms.

It was only recently discovered in 1997. It’s located on the Great Barrier Reef, east of Mackay, around 35 metres underwater. The Llewellyn is a historical treasure that experienced divers have the privilege to explore. If you plan on getting closer than 500 metres to the boat, you must obtain a permit.

14. The Cremer

The Cremer was a 50-metre long passenger and cargo boat that frequently sailed between Indonesia, Singapore and China. In 1943, during a heavy storm, it lost control and crashed near Keswick Island.

Today it lies just 10 metres offshore, sheltered from wind and tides, making it the perfect dive. You can explore the remnants of the iron frame, deck, engine, propeller shaft, and flywheel. Turtles, sweetlips and grouper largely populate it while the frame is covered in soft corals.

15. Karma

MV Karma was a 42-metre long ship that suffered bad karma – it sunk right off the coast in December 2003, in the Bundaberg area. Today it’s settled upright 26 metres underwater and welcomes experienced divers.

Although it’s a recent shipwreck, it quickly became one of the best dives in Queensland. Divers get to explore the two-tier structure, cabins and engine room. The abundance of marine life will fascinate you. From reef fish to octopus, nudibranchs, gropers, stingrays, wobbegongs, sea snakes, turtles, and even moray eels!

There are five climatic types of rainforest, and Queensland has them all! You can walk through the wet tropics, subtropical, dry, warm, and cool temperate forests. Your Big Lap is the perfect time to get closer to get back in touch with the wild nature. Take some of the walks and learn more about how you can do your part in keeping them safe.

There are three major rainforests in Queensland with several national parks inside them. Almost 70% of the forests reside in the northern part of Queensland. The Daintree Rainforest is the oldest tropical rainforest on Earth, located on the northeast coast. Nearby you can find World Heritage-listed Kuranda Rainforest. The Daintree Rainforest

The 180-million-year-old Daintree Rainforest got the name after Richard Daintree, an Australian photographer, and geologist. It sits between Cairns and Cooktown in the north of Queensland. Spread out across 1,200 square kilometres, it’s the largest rainforest in Queensland. The area covers the Daintree Region, State Forest, and privately owned land that the state is still buying back in a conservation project.

It’s also the oldest tropical rainforest still thriving in the world. Down the coastline north of the Daintree River, the tropical forest spreads to the sea’s edge. The Daintree Region thrives on tourism, but it has kept its wilderness and authenticity.

Daintree has a lot to offer. It’s surrounded by pristine beaches, scenic mountains, waterfalls, and dense forests. It’s rated as the best biologically diverse rainforest. Daintree is home to 65% of Australia’s butterfly and bat species. An impressive 30% of reptiles and frogs also live here! Bird lovers can find 18% of bird species that feed on 12,000 different insect species.

There are ancient plants known as “Green Dinosaurs”. You can find around 150 different types of trees on one hectare alone – this speaks volumes about the diversity! All these make the area so special and unique, isolating it from the other rainforest areas worldwide.

Where To Stay

The Daintree Region covers Daintree, Cape Tribulation, Mossman, Cow Bay, Port Douglas, and Bloomfield. It’s 100km northwest of Cairns if you prefer to visit it for a day only. 

The Daintree National Park is formed of two sections – Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation.

There are several free camps on the edge of the forest and ecolodges inside for a one-of-a-kind experience.

Best Time To Visit

The perfect time to visit the Daintree Rainforest is from May to September. The cold and dry months are more pleasant for exploring, and there’s less rainfall. 

Things To See And Do

Daintree National Park 

Take a daily excursion from Cairns or Port Douglas, but it will only give you a glimpse of the genuine treasure this place offers. You need a few days to take in all Daintree has to show. The admission tickets cost $30 for adults and provide access for three consecutive days.

You can take some easy or challenging hikes, explore it on your own or join a tour. Get all the necessary info at the information centre if you decide to wander alone. The well-structured boardwalks help for more accessible walking and orientation in the forest. 

Canopy Tower

Climb the 23-metre tall canopy tower in the Daintree Discovery Centre for a unique view of the rainforest from above.

Mossman Gorge

This is a must-visit part of the Daintree Rainforest, with impressive and easy bushwalking and breathtaking sights. Start at the visitor center, where a shuttle will take you deeper into the rainforest for exploring.

Waterfalls

The Daintree Rainforest has a large number of year-round flowing waterfalls. The Tranquility Falls are a fantastic sight, but they’re on private property, so you need to purchase a $10 entry ticket. If you’re in for a challenge, the Alexandra Bay waterfalls are a 2-hour hike each way along a stony creek. But you’ll be rewarded with a swim in the rock pool under the waterfalls. Bloomfield waterfall is a must stop when driving from Cairns to Cooktown via Daintree before entering Wujal Wujal township.

Beaches 

The uniqueness of the Daintree Rainforest is proved once again with its pristine beaches. Some of the best beaches are Cape Tribulation, Cow Bay, Wonga, Myall, and Thornton beach.

Walks

Daintree has trails with varying difficulty to suit all fitness levels. Mount Sorrow Ridge Trail is a tad challenging and takes around an hour and a half, but the view from the top is worth it.

Marrdja Botanical Walk, Jindalba, and Dubuji Boardwalks are light level walks. The Kuku Yalangji Cultural Heritage Beach Walk is excellent if you want to know more about the people who populated the region.

Gondwana Rainforest

Once known as the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves, Gondwana is the most extensive area of the world’s subtropical rainforest. It rests on 366,500 hectares from Newcastle to Brisbane and is over 180 million years old. The southeast Queensland rainforest is a World Heritage Site with fifty separate reserves. It mounts the Queensland and New South Wales borders.

Because in the beginning fossils covered it, the rainforest got the name after Gondwanaland, the supercontinent that existed from the Neoproterozoic and fell apart during the Jurassic.

Due to the vast size, there are different southeast Queensland points where you can access the Gondwana Rainforest and explore the unique endangered plants, animals, ancient landscapes, and eroded craters of extinct shield volcanoes.

Where To Stay

Springbrook, Mount Barney, and Main Range National Park are the perfect bases for exploring the Gondwana Rainforest. They all provide free camps, forest retreats, and conventional stays.

Best Time To Visit

The cooler, drier months are ideal for getting the most of the Gondwana Rainforest, no matter which part you decide to visit. Gondwana combines warm temperate, cool temperate, subtropical, and dry rainforests.

National Parks

Springbrook National Park is a huge haven for nature lovers. It offers stunning views, beautiful waterfalls, swimming holes, amazing massive ancient trees, and many birds and wildlife. The Apple Tree Park within is a must-do!

Mount Barney National Park is the best place to hike, get a taste of adventure scrambling across rocks, explore and camp in the rainforest. On a bad day, it can be foggy and misty.

Main Range National Park offers a serene and scenic atmosphere with birds singing all around. The ultimate park for relaxation, walking and hiking amidst the rainforest.

Walks

The Gondwana Rainforest offers the most exciting walks and hikes from every rainforest mentioned on the list. There are walks of 300m all the way up to 54km in length. If you’re up for a challenge go for the longest, the Great Gold Coast Hinterland Walk. You get the chance to walk along the rim of an ancient volcano!

Some of the lightest but still fabulous walks are the Twin Falls circuit, Natural Bridge circuit, and Warringa Pool track.

Waterfalls

Gondwana combines cool and subtropical rainforest, thus providing an abundance of waterfalls, and after a tiring hike, you can take a swim in some of them. Purling Brooke Falls, Twin Falls, Goomoolahra, and Queen Mary Falls are well worth visiting.

Kuranda Rainforest

The Kuranda Rainforest is relatively small, spread on 110 square kilometres and more than 10,000 old. It’s settled on the eastern edge of Atherton Tablelands. The forest got the name after Kuran, a Yindinji word referring to the acorn-leafed plant. It represents a corridor between the Daintree Rainforest in the north and Atherton Tablelands in the south. Parts of Kuranda and the national parks are part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

Kuranda is located 25 kilometres away from Cairns, so it makes an excellent day trip destination. You can take the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway or Kuranda Scenic Railway to reach it.

Endemic frog species, koalas, kangaroos, dingoes, Tasmanian Devils, snakes, and freshwater crocodiles live inside the rainforest and the wildlife parks. When it comes to trees, Kuranda is home to thousands of plant species. It’s one of the most diverse plant areas on Earth. There are more than a thousand species of trees reported from the Far North Queensland tropical rainforest.

Where To Stay

The Kuranda Village is the centre of the Kuranda Rainforest. It’s known as the colorful village in the forest. It’s very accomodating, has plenty of markets with picturesque stalls and a relaxed atmosphere.

You can stay in the lodges in the forest, the bed and breakfasts in the village, or some of the free camps a little further.

Best Time To Visit

Plan your visit from February to December when the temperature is pleasantly warm, and the rainfall is bearable. For lower prices of flights and fewer crowds, opt to visit in March and April.

National Parks

The majestic Kuranda National Park is easy to explore on foot; the tracks through the park are very well marked, easy to follow, and can be achieved by anyone with reasonable fitness. If you’re feeling lazy, you can take the cableway for a different kind of experience. It glides over the tree-tops and provides great views of the forest below. There are two stops at the Red and Blue peak stations. From there, you can take the short walkways to experience the rainforest firsthand.

Baron Gorge National Park embraces cliffs, trails, and rivers to tell its glory. For ultimate relaxation visit Lake Placid inside the park, it is an easily accessible area on the Baron River.

Sanctuaries, ZOOs And Gardens

Kuranda is home of the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, the Koala Gardens, Birdworld, and BatReach. These places all offer unique sights of wonderful species, and the special places designed for their comfortable living in the forest. Feed the birds, cuddle koalas or admire the beauty of over 1,500 different butterflies!

Kuranda Scenic Railway

This popular railway goes from Cairns to Kuranda. It is a spectacular journey providing breathtaking views of the World Heritage Listed rainforest, steep valleys, and jaw-dropping waterfalls within the Barron Gorge National Park.

Lookouts

Glacier Rock and Wrights Lookout require some hiking to be reached but will reward you with some fantastic views. Both lookouts are perfect if you want to get out and about and experience some great scenes and enjoy a good workout. 

Waterfalls

The dramatic, 260 meters tall Barron Falls roar over the cliff during the wet season. You can access the fall via the walking track leading to the observing platform or admire it from above via the sky rail or train.

8. Jackey Jackey Creek

Less than 3km off the main road after crossing the Jardine River you can find this little camping spot. Due to it being hard to find it’s never crowded. Dip your feet in the crystal clear creek or try jumping in from the swinging on the rope right next to it. Most times you can have the place to yourselves!

Great pit-stop on your way from Chillagoe to Karumba, where you can camp right on the river. The South side is pretty limited but if the water level allows it, crossi to the North and you’ll find a larger area. Plenty of fish, crocodiles and kangaroos can be seen!

16. Pennefather Beach Camp

Many camping spots on Pennefather River, but this one sits at the top of our list. To reach it you must take on an adventurous journey through the dunes but the end is very rewarding. Crystal clear water, soft sand, and great fishing spots all around.

17. Nolan’s Brook

Big camping area with a tranquil atmosphere on the Old Telegraph Track. After you cross Nolan’s there’s a crystal clear creek you can chill out in, plenty of shades to camp under and relax. The water level at Nolan’s depends on the season so make sure your vehicle is suitable for the challenge before you start crossing.

Townsville is home to some incredible parks with some beautiful views. They are perfect for a walk, picnic or (in many cases) a swim too! The Strand is Townsville’s seaside foreshore. Families love to spend the day here as there are restaurants, a playground, coffee shops and a man made rock pool. Riverway, Townsville’s riverfront park and Warrina Lakes in Innisfail are great too. Both offer beautiful walking tracks, picnic areas and playgrounds. Make sure you take some provisions to feed the ducks and turtles too! Plus at Riverway, there are some outdoor pools to splash about in.

2. Walk and Explore

This area is absolutely chock-full of walking adventures on which you can learn about the local history and culture and experience wildlife too. “The Forts” on Magnetic Island is one of the most popular as wild koalas line the trees on the way up to The WWII Forts at the top. 

3. Take A Dip

Chasing waterfalls and jumping into water holes is another of the region’s best experiences. Wallaman Falls, 160kms North West of Townsville, is Australia’s largest single drop waterfall and is certainly worth a visit. Cardwell Spa pools are an insta-lovers dream (but they’re not warm as the name might suggest. Little Crystal Creek and Big Crystal Creek are lovely water holes to spend an afternoon. There are too many ‘watery’ places to name here but wherever you choose to go, you won’t be disappointed!

4. Get Adventurous In Mission Beach

If you are adventurous you can jump from a plane at 15,000ft from up there you can see the Great Barrier Reef, finishing with a beach landing, definitely a one of a kind experience. There is also a mountain bike rainforest circuit in Mission Beach. The track is suitable for beginner mountain bike riders, but keep in mind it can get very humid which will add to the challenge.

5. Put Your Learning Hat On

Townsville and surrounds is a museum mecca! The Museum of Tropical Queensland, The North Queensland Army Museum, The Maritime Museum of Townsville are just a few. There are a number of outdoor learning experiences which are both entertaining and great for families.

At Paronella Park, you’ll find a beautiful old Spanish Castle with an incredible history. At Tyto Wetlands, you’ll experience culture and nature combined. At Mamu Tropical Skywalk, you’ll learn about the rainforest while journeying to the top of the canopy. This region certainly adds thrill to learning experiences!

6. Go Fishing

Townsville loves fishing! The area offers a number of fishing charters, but there are some other cool places to go too, both on the coast and inland. The piers at Townsville and Cardwell, rocks South of the main beach at Mission Beach (almost to Clump Point) is a very good and popular spot for fishing on the reef too. If you’re looking for something a little different, Barra Fun Park is an eclectic mix of theme park and barra fishing experience!

7. Island Hop

There are so many incredible islands in the area to explore. Magnetic Island is the obvious choice as it’s one of the biggest and offers the most to do, but have you considered Dunk Island, Coomb Island or Wheeler Islands? Easily accessible by water taxi from Mission Beach, these islands are part of the Family Islands National Park. If you’re looking for a unique experience, try Hinchinbrook Island – but book your spot early, only 40 people are permitted to stay at one time to protect biodiversity.

The Sunshine Coast is renowned for its waterfalls and natural swimming holes. Top of the list would be Kondalilla Falls and Buderim Falls. Both an easy walk to the waterholes and views.

2. Australia Zoo

You can’t come to the Sunshine Coast without visiting the world renowned Australia Zoo. Get a photo with the Irwin family statue on entry, hop on the train to see the vast landscape of animals and enjoy the croc show too.

3. Get Set For Adventure

This area isn’t just about sleepy towns and chilling on the beach, there are a number of ways to inject a bit of adventure into your stay.

Spend the day at Aqua Park Coolum, push yourself to the limit at the TreeTop Challenge at The Big Pineapple, or learn to ski at Oz Ski Resort.

Why not get your rev heads together and muscle it out at the Big Kart Track? It is the largest commercial go kart track around. There are tandem karts so the kids can join you as well.

4. EAT!

The great thing about the Sunshine Coast is that it is a mix of coast and country, and that is reflected in the food. You can grab incredible seafood by the beach or head to the hinterland to taste local produce. Take a day trip and explore the Sunshine Coast Food Trail where you can explore dairies, plantations, wineries, breweries, gourmet restaurants, cooking schools and more.

5. Check Out Bli Bli Watersports Complex

Spend the day doing water sports whether that means trying your hand at cable wakeboarding, tackling the inflatable water park or having a go at the Barramundi fishing area it is a great place to spend the day.

6. Stay Indoors

While you will probably want to spend a lot of time outdoors in this region, there’s also plenty of reason to head inside. With a number of options, indoor fun in the Sunshine Coast is more that just a rainy day activity.

Head to the SeaLife Aquarium to enjoy the scheduled marine shows, say hi to penguins and seal and even get hands on with some marine life. The Smash Pit is a unique attraction that’ll help you relieve some pent-up tension (not that you should have any during your Big Lap!).

7. Head To The Hinterland

Although the Sunshine Coast is well-known for its beaches, heading inland will delight you just as much as the coast. Maleny, Monteville and Mapleton are incredible little towns and provide some small town charm, cute scenery and lovely places to visit, shop and eat. Maleny is especially good if you’re a bit of a foodie: take the cheese trail around the area’s dairies, head to Maleny Mountain Wines or stop in at Brouhaha Brewery.

Don’t forget the lesser-known hinterland towns of Pomona, Kenilworth and Cooroy though. They are definitely worth a visit too.

Make sure you stop off at the roadside produce spots to pick up fresh fruit and veggies along the way.

8. Hit The Beaches

Enjoy a day relaxing on the many beautiful beaches that the Sunshine Coast has to offer. Pack a picnic or grab some fish and chips from any of the many eateries that are close by to them.

If you have kids, Bulcoch Beach, Kings Beach and Mooloolaba Spit are awesome places to spend the day. The tidal pools at Kings Beach are great fun too!

If you love to surf, Coolum Beach and the surf breaks in Noosa National Parks (Tea Trea Bay, Boiling Pot, Granite Bay etc.) are the go-to places.

If you want some peace and quiet away from the crowds, Wurtella Beach is a bit of a local secret!
