Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

Of course, Uluru makes the top of the list, and for good reason! There really is something special about Uluru and Kata-Juta (The Olga’s). They are the crown jewels of The Red Centre and until you have been there yourself to experience and feel the power, the culture, and the beauty of the rock formations, it’s hard to explain, and it’s deeply moving.

There are so many ways to explore Uluru and Kata-Tjuta, and can be done in complete luxury or on a budget. There are guided tours, day hikes, camel rides, Segway tours and bike riding. Or you can just drive around to the many viewing areas and take in these magical formations at sunrise and sunset and bask in all their glory, and of course, get your insta-worthy shots!

An absolute must-do while you’re visiting the area, is to see Bruce Munro’s ‘Field Of Light’ installation. An incredible display of 50,000 coloured LED lights scattered through the spinifex grass with Uluru as the backdrop. Watch the lights come to life as the sun sets on the horizon with Uluru in the backdrop. Once it’s dark, you can walk down into the display, with the stars shining above you. It is true magic. 

Pro Tip: There’s no free camping, only the Ayres Rock Resort accommodation, which usually has special deals and offers, so keep an eye on their website and  make sure to book in advance during the tourist season (May-September).

Watarrka National Park – Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park, is a lesser known gem in the Red Centre but boasts some serious wow-factor and the views across the valley are breathtaking, especially as the sun is rising.

The most scenic way to get to Watarrka National Park is driving through the West MacDonnell Ranges and via the Mereenie Loop Track which has 200kms of dirt road and is a great way to experience the vastness and landscapes of the Red Centre on your way to Uluru. You can see the escarpment from miles away before you arrive, building your excitement as you draw closer!

Pro Tip: Plan your fuel consumption! Fuel up in Alice Springs and carry extra fuel with you if possible. Fuel is very expensive once you leave the larger towns and there are long distances between fuel stations.

The best way to explore Kings Canyon is by hiking the iconic Rim Walk as the sun rises. Set off  early and leave from camp before sunrise, so that you can start your hike in the cool of the early morning. The glow of the morning sun will illuminate the valley below and highlights the 300 m sandstone rock face, for which the canyon is famous for.

The early morning hike is quiet, cool, and pure magic to see the canyon come to life as the sun rises. Take lots of snacks and take your time to explore the hidden gems that the hike offers, like the Garden of Eden. The hike is 7.4kms and has many stairs to the top, but it’s worth it! Once you’ve explored the canyon, head back down to the bottom before the heat of the day and spend the afternoon relaxing by the pool at the Kings Canyon Resort. It’s an epic place to explore  and definitely one for the bucket list.

Tjoritja West MacDonnell Ranges 

The “West Macs” as they are affectionately known, stretch 644kms from east to west, west of Alice Spring and is the home of the famous Larapinta Trail. There is so much to explore in the West Macs, and you can spend anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks exploring the extensive and striking gorges, sandy water holes, escarpment lookouts, or enjoying some of the many hikes and day walks through each section of the West Macs. 

The West Macs are teeming with bush flora and fauna and are rich with aboriginal significance and artefacts. Some highlights include the Ochre Pits and the striking landscapes made famous by the Aboriginal artist, Albert Namatjira.

There are so many highlights along the West MacDonnell Ranges, including Ellery Creek Big Hole, Omiston Gorge and Standley Chasm. 

A great place to cool off and refresh is Glen Helen Gorge, 133kms west of Alice Springs. Glen Helen Gorge is a permanent water hole and the junction point where the Finke River makes its way to the Simpson Desert. It’s also where you can take in views of Mount Sonder. 

Glen Helen Gorge is one of the few spots where you can sit in the air-conditioned pub and enjoy a cold schooner after a swim.

The Red Centre region is so unique and is the ultimate representation of the Australian outback, rich in Aboriginal culture and natural beauty. Getting there can be a bit of a mission, but definitely somewhere you should plan to stay for a while and explore, there’s so much to see and do.

Hiking Tips:

My biggest piece of advice when embarking on a hike, whether it’s a day hike or multi-day, especially in the NT, is to carry more water than you think you will need. All year-round in the NT, temperatures are high and drinking water sources along trails can be unreliable as water can be stagnant. Make sure you have plenty of water!

Other tips when hiking in the NT: 

• Start early – start your hike early to beat the heat and finish your hike before the hottest part of the day. 
• Wear sun protection – clothing and a good hat.
• Download the AllTrails app, and it’s recommended that you carry a GPS and personal locator beacon if you are attempting a multi-day hike. 
• Ensure you can secure your food in a dry sack up in a tree to prevent ants, birds, and native mice from stealing your food. There’s nothing worse than running out of food on your hike. 
• Always pack your swimsuit to cool off 

Whether you’re an experienced hiker looking for a challenge, or just starting to dip your toe in the hiking waters, there are loads of day hikes and multi-day hikes in the NT to tackle! You can experience the diverse range of landscapes, waterfalls, waterholes, and flora and fauna that make the NT so unique and special. The Northern Territory is truly a place you will never forget.

1. Larapinta Trail

The Larapinta Trail is world-famous and one of the most popular bushwalking trails in Australia. It is a big one on many hikers’ bucket list and not for the faint-hearted. Larapinta is a 223 km thru-hike that traverses through the arid West MacDonnell Ranges in the Red Centre. 

This hike requires some logistics and planning.  You will need to allow between 16-21 days to complete all 12 sections of trail. If you’re going to tackle all 12 sections, you will also need to organise food drops and allow for rest days.

Along the way, the Larapinta Trail is dotted with croc-safe waterholes to cool off in, as well as the achievement and breathtaking views of the 1380m summit of Mount Sonder. Enjoy exploring the ancient rock escarpments, vast floodplains, rugged canyons and over 600 species of rare desert flora and fauna, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. 

This is a challenging hike and can only be tackled between April – August due to high temperatures. Find out more about the Larapinta Trail here.

Difficulty: Grade 3-4 moderate to difficult

2. Jatbula Trail

Jatbula Trail is a 62 km thru-hike in Nitmiluk National Park in the Katherine region. This is a lesser-known hike in the NT, but one worth mentioning! The hike starts at Nitmiluk Gorge and finishes at Leliyn, also known as Edith Falls. 

The hike follows the western edge of the Arnhem Land escarpment over sandstone plateaus, through woodlands, open forest and riverine landscapes. Each designated camping area is located at a safe swimming hole or cascade where you can cool-off and enjoy the surroundings. 

The Jatbula Trail is a paid hike – you will need a permit which can be purchased through the Nitmiluk National Park. These permits usually sell out really quickly but keep in contact with the National Park office and put your name on the cancellation list if already sold out. The trail is limited to 15 walkers per day to ensure there is no overcrowding on the walking trails and at campsites.

3. Kings Canyon Rim Walk

If you love incredible natural wonders, then you will love this hike! Get up early and leave camp in the dark to beat the heat,  but also to see the sun rising over the canyon and valley below. 

This hike starts with the most challenging section first with around 500 steep steps to climb to the top of the canyon but once you’re up there you will be rewarded with 360-degree views of the valley below.

There are many highlights on the trail including the Garden of Eden, sandstone domes (a mini-Purnululu) known as the Lost City due to it resembling an ancient city, and a journey through Priscilla’s Crack made famous by the classic Australian movie, Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

The rim walk is best started early, before 9am. If the temperatures are high, the walk may be closed by the National Park. Don’t forget to take some snacks to enjoy while taking in the incredible views and awe-inspiring sandstone rock face. Take your time on this hike to enjoy all the amazing changes in rock formations and scenery.

4. Tabletop Track

If you’re wanting a hike that takes in some of the best waterfalls in the NT, then the Tabletop Track in Litchfield National Park is for you. This loop circuit takes 3-5 days depending on how many side trails you want to take and gives you access to Florence Falls, Greenant Creek, Wangi Falls and Walker Creek. It’s a great way to explore the unique Northern Territory landscapes which takes in woodlands, Pandanus-lined creeks and unusual sandstone formations. It’s the perfect hike to explore remote and secluded areas of Litchfield National Park.

Tabletop Track requires a permit which can be purchased at the NT National Parks. You will need to carry all your supplies, including water as there is not a reliable source of drinking water along the trail. This hike can only be completed between April and September due to the high temperatures and threat of wildfires in the wet season.

Important Travel Tips

• Basic Road Info: The Red Centre Way is not a specific road; it’s a little over 1100km long route, a combination of Namatjira Drive, Luritja Road, Larapinta Drive as well as the Lasseter Highway. It goes through sealed road and unsealed 4WD tracks. It would be best if you take a 4WD for this route, even though it’s predominantly paved. The Mereenie Loop is strictly a 4WD as well as most secluded detours.
• Best Travel Time: The best and most comfortable time regarding temperature and crowds is during the Spring from March to May or Autumn from September to November. You can expect temperatures between 20 to 30 degrees and dry weather. If you want to dodge the crowds, try not to avoid visiting in June and July.
• Estimated Travel Time: Allow at least 6 days to explore the Red Centre Way. If you’re willing to make several detours and linger a little longer by the most popular attraction and gorges, it can take you around 10 days.
• What To Bring: A 4WD, some spare tyres and repair kits are essential. You must get prepared for anything; there’s limited phone reception most of the time, and you can drive for 200km without seeing another car. In some areas there are long distances between service stations, so bring extra fuel. Get some great walking shoes, sunscreen, extra water and groceries. Alice Springs is a good place to stock up on these things.
• Tickets And Permissions: Three-day entry to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – $38 for adults; Standley Chasm – $10 per adult, $6 per child; a permit to drive between Gosse Bluff and Kings Canyon, an Aboriginal Land Trusts – $5; Alice Springs Desert Park- $37 per adult, $18.50 per child.

Alice Springs To Glen Helen Gorge

The first leg of the Red Centre Way takes you through the MacDonnell Ranges and the abundance of unmissable stops. Taking off from Alice Springs, you’ll reach Glen Helen Gorge in just 132km. Along the ride, the first stop is Simpsons Gap, only 20 minutes out of Alice Springs. Standley Chasm is the next one, located on privately owned land in the West MacDonnell Ranges, with sky-high walls around the chasm that change their colours with the sun’s movement during the day.

If you’re feeling brave, dive at Ellery Creek Big Hole, a permanent water hole with freezing waters all through the year. Serpentine Gorge is right next door to it, featuring a wonderful lookout just a short hike away. You get to cool off at the small waterhole along the track. Glen Helen is your final destination for the day, a scenic spot with a tranquil atmosphere as well as a permanent water hole.

Glen Helen Gorge To Mereenie Loop

The second part of the Red Centre Way takes you to the doorstep of the challenging 4WD track – the Meerenie Loop track. But before that, take a detour to Ormiston Gorge, an easily accessible gorge with a sandy bank and freezing water. Take the Ghost Gum Walk up to the lookout, where you can find amazing views as well as a kiosk with snacks.

The Redbank Gorge is the next stop, a tad more challenging to access; it requires lots of rocks and sand you need to navigate through. But the gorge is worth it!

Just 133km from Glen Helen, excluding the detours, you’ll reach the Meerenie Loop.

Meerenie Loop To Watarrka National Park

The next part of the Red Centre Way takes you deeper into the remoteness of the outback, so make sure to stock up on fuel and food. The Mereenie Loop takes you to the Kings Canyon in the Central Australian Outback. The best way to traverse the area is to take some memorable walks.

The 6km long Kings Canyon Rim Walk starts with challenging 500 steps. It takes you through the marvellous landscapes of the canyon, sliding to the Garden of Eden waterhole and the staggering rock formations of the Lost City.

The 4km long South Wall Return Walk and the 2.5km long Kings Creek Walk are equally impressive as well as easier to do. The canyon is the route’s highlight, so take enough time to take in the million years old views.

Watarrka National Park To Yulara

Fill up your tank for the following, longer stretch from Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park to Yulara. The road between the two is 272km long and remote. You can expect to pass a handful of vehicles and a small number of stops. Mount Coner Lookout, also known as “Fooluru”- because first-timers often confuse it with Uluru, it’s very close to what Ayers Rock looks like from afar. Climb to the other side over the dune for a view of the salt lake. It’s the last good rest stop for a while, so make use of it.

At Yulara, you can visit the Red Desert Reptiles to learn about the reptiles of the Red Desert of Central Australia and how they thrive in this harsh environment. You can hold some of the reptiles for a photo, especially entertaining if you’re travelling with kids! At Wintjiri Arts & Museum, you get to see more wild animals, birds and insects that live in Central Australia. There are more details on the history and development of the area as well as the Aboriginal culture.

Yulara To Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park

The second highlight of the Red Centre Way is, of course, Uluru or Ayers Rock. The gem of Central Australia is reachable within a 25minute ride from Yulara. The ticket to Ayers Rock ensures a three-day entry, precisely how much you need to explore the valley in depth. Depending on your budget, there are a plethora of unique paid and free activities. The area is known to be pricy with almost non-existent free camping.

Besides Uluru, visit the Olgas -another unbelievable rock structure in Kata Tjuta. There are numerous walks with varying difficulty that take you through the best spots in the Valley of the Winds. Don’t forget to check the Walpa Gorge and the Mutitjulu Waterhole along the way. If you feel like treating yourself, hit the Field of Light after dark. This art installation by Bruce Munro features over 50,000 globes bringing the desert to life after sunset.

Kata Tjuta National Park To Alice Springs

It’s time to get back to where you started; from Uluru, you’ll need to drive around 4 hours or 468km to reach Alice Springs. When you need a break, stop at Erldunda Roadhouse to meet their friendly emus and get lunch. Stuarts Well Roadhouse is another great roadhouse settled next to a camel farm.

Once you reach Alice Springs, take a few days to take in everything this vivid town offers. Visit the Alice Springs Desert Park or cuddle a kangaroo at the Kangaroo Sanctuary. The Telegraph Sation Historical Reserve is a good trip back in time, and the Anzac Hill provides impressive views over Alice Springs. If you’d prefer a relaxing stroll, visit the Olive Pink Botanic Gardens.

Beware, most tracks require an experienced 4WD driver. If you’re not confident enough, stick to the sealed road to avoid unpleasant situations.

Kakadu National Park

Kakadu National Park is a World Heritage site and a good starting point for your 4WD adventure through the Northern Territory. While you can access the park via a 2WD, a 4WD is the best accessory in exploring the area. There are a few tracks in the south and north sections of the park.

In the south part, you’ll find 4WD tracks leading to Twin Falls, Jim Jim Falls, Maguk and Jarrangbarnmi. On the north section, you’ll find an unsealed trail leading to West Alligator Head. The best off-grid camping sites in Kakadu National Park are accessible via a 4WD. If you’re willing to stay the night, opt for Maguk Campground, Jarrangbarnmi, or Bucket Billabong.

Red Centre Way 4WD Track

The Red Centre Way is one of the longest loop tracks starting and ending in Alice Springs. It’s an easy 4WD track that even beginners can dare to tackle. It starts by driving through MacDonnell Ranges, leading to Watarrka National Park. In the first section, you get to see Simsons Gap and Ormiston Gorge. At Watarrka National Park, you get to explore Kings Canyon and refresh down by the spring.

The track then takes you to Kata Tjuta National Park to admire Uluru and the nearby Olgas Rocks.
There are several excellent camps along this track for a much-needed rest, like Point Howard Lookout near MacDonnell Ranges and Ayers Rock Campground near Uluru.

Finke Gorge National Park 4WD Track

Finke Gorge National Park is the real treat for the experienced 4WD looking for a new challenge. It’s the most demanding and exciting 4WD track in Northern Territory. This track starts at Finke Gorge National Park and follows the Finke River all the way to Watarrka National Park. The landscape is full of picturesque red cliffs, rich birdlife and excellent shades provided by the Red Gum trees.

The camps in the area are predominantly bush, so stock up on everything you might need before starting your trip. Stay at Running Waters, Red Rock Waterhole or Palm Valley Campground.

Sandover Highway 4WD Track

Sandover Highway is the real off the grid track, 560km long and completely remote. It starts at Plenty Highway, stretches to the Queensland border and ends at Barkly Highway. This track requires medium to advanced experience in a 4WD. It might seem easy at first glance, but bad weather conditions can make it a nightmare to drive. Think of very slippery, muddy holes, flooding and sandy sections. That’s why it’s best to travel in autumn and spring.

The area is very remote; there’s no coverage or roadhouses. It’s best to pack all necessities, including fuel, extra tyres and repair kits, and maybe travel with others. There are a couple of gravel pit rest areas along the road but no facilities on site.

Greater Litchfield Loop

Also known as the Reynolds River 4WD track, this loop is a short, medium difficulty route. It’s a dry-season only, 44km long trail that takes you through Litchfield National Park, the Tjaynera Falls at Sandy Creek and finishes at Daly River Road. Don’t worry; it’s not a dull track! Depending on the season, you might have to cross a few creeks and rivers. Greater Litchfield might seem short, but it takes you 3.5 hours to do it one way!

The views along the way will leave you speechless. If you feel like unwinding, there are some camps at Florence Falls or Surprise Falls Campground.

Gunbarrel Highway 4WD Track

Gunbarrel Highway is Australia’s most famous 4WD track that stretches through four states, the Northern Territory, South and Western Australia. The constructor wanted it to be straight as a gun barrel and even dub a highway; that’s how it got its name! But the track is far from a highway looking – you can find landslides, floodings, giant stones, rough terrain, and sandy sections.

It’s 1,350km long with challenging difficulty. It connects Carnegie Station in Western Australia to the Victory Downs in the Northern Territory. If you’re an experienced 4WD driver with an excellent high-clearance vehicle, get ready – this track will provide excitement and challenges like no other.

You’ll need around four days to do this track, but there are great bush camps along to rest and reset.

Binns 4WD Track

The Binns 4WD track is a true representation of the natural beauty of the Northern Territory. Named after Bill Binns, a park ranger who served in the area almost his whole career, this track is over 2200km long and requires more than ten days. It’s a real treat for avid 4WD adventure-seekers. The trail takes you through the Simpson Desert to Alice Springs and the East MacDonnell Ranges and Gemtree.

Traversing mountains, desert and vast plains, you’ll face sand dunes, soft riverbeds, rough terrain, bitumen and muddy holes. However, the Binns Track goes through Gregory National Park, which has limited access from December through May, so plan your adventure accordingly.

Nitmiluk National Park

Nitmiluk National Park has some fabulous spots you’ll miss if you don’t have a 4WD. Don’t expect some very challenging trek, rather beginner-friendly tracks leading to the gems of the park. Make sure to drive up to Edith Falls and get a canoe cruise on the Katherine Gorge.

Nitmiluk National Park is set on a gorge formed by Katherine River with campsites on the banks. The terrain is rocky and sandy but relatively flat and accessible year-round.

The Garig Gunak Barlu National Park

The Garig Gunak Barlu National Park is a must-visit destination; it tells a story about the two sides of Top End history in the Cobourg Peninsula. You can make the 570-kilometre journey from Darwin alone, or you can join a 4WD tour. Beware, the area is very remote and challenging; you must drive over East Alligator River at Cahill’s Crossing since it’s the only land entry to West Arnhem Land.

This is the most mysterious of all 4WD tracks you can take in the Northern Territory. There’s not much info except you have to obtain a transit and camping permit costing over $200. A permit is a must before entering Arnhem Land, or you’ll lose your vehicle. Garig Gunak Barlu National Park is open from May to October, but it’s very weather-dependent. You can be denied access if there’s been heavy rainfall recently. June to late August is the safest bet.

Hardies 4WD Track

The Hardies 4WD Track takes you through Mary River National Park and is accessible only from May to October. It’s an easy, 25km long 4WD track but provides some of the best views and photography opportunities. The beginning of the track is the most challenging since you’ll pass numerous billabongs, river crossings, and rock formations.

Corroboree and Bird Billabong are worth stopping at as well as the Hardies Lagoon. You can stay at Shady Camp and try some fishing, but beware of the crocodiles in the area.

Chambers Pillar

The Chambers 4WD track is suitable for beginner 4WD drivers since it’s easy to moderate difficulty and only 160km long. It begins at Alice Springs and continues south on the Old South Road and southeast to Chambers Pillar in the Chambers Pillar Historical Reserve. The landscape surrounding the track is magnificent, and the track itself is sand for the most part. It takes you through sand dunes, a rough low range steep decline, and some patches of corrugation. Some manage to tow a trailer too. Stay at Chambers Pillar for the night and enjoy stargazing before driving back the following morning.

Tabelands Highway

The Tablelands Highway is an easy, single-lane 4WD track, a great introduction to 4WD for beginners. It’s 380km long, connecting Cape Crawford and Barkly Homestead Roadhouse. It takes around 6.5 hours to do it. Since it’s a major unfenced cattle grazing region, you can expect red kangaroos and cattle to cross your road. The track is sealed and can be done year-round, but be careful after rain. There are several rest areas along the road and good camps on the Barkly Stock Route if you decide to stay the night.

Old Andado Track

The Old Andado Track is one of the most remote tracks in the Northern Territory. It’s a 430km 4WD trek that runs from Alice Springs to Mount Dare, through Oodnadatta and the edges of the Simpson Desert.

After a rain, some sections can be closed, so it’s best to travel it during the dry season. Some areas are highly challenging, so it’s best for at least moderately experienced drivers. The Old Anando is actually part of the large Binns Track, so it’s a great option if you want to experience good 4WD without doing the whole Binns Track. The highlight of this track is the rarest tree, Waddy Tree that you can find in some sections.

Beware this is a very remote area, so pack any repair kits for your vehicle since anything can happen.
There are fantastic bush camps for which you have to be self-sufficient, but there are also ones with amenities such as Old Andado Camp.

Gunlom Falls – one of the most popular places to visit in Kakadu – is now closed to the general public until further notice. Previously, tourists were unable to visit the top part of the Falls, but now, they will also be unable to visit the stunning infinity pools.

The decision comes after the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority (AAPA) have taken Parks Australia to court over sacred site offences. AAPA believes that Parks Australia has been in violation of their lease agreement by constructing a walking track in Gunlom Falls.

Mick Markham, chairperson for the Gunlom Land Trust, has weighed in stating that the traditional owners of the land believe this sacred site is not being properly respected by tourists. They have asked that the entire Gunlom Falls area remains closed until a decision has been made and legal action has been taken.

Make sure if you are currently in Kakadu, you respect the current laws and do not visit Gunlom Falls. If you were planning to visit the Falls on your Big Lap, don’t despair, there’s plenty more to see and do in Kakadu. Make sure you adjust your plans accordingly.

According to a new report by travel company Skyscanner, Alice Springs is now amongst the top three most popular travel destinations in Australia, with many looking to spend their winter vacation there.

It seems like an unlikely destination, especially with all the normally popular places to visit, such as Cairns and the Whitsundays.

Situated within Nitmiluk National Park, Katherine Gorge is a culturally significant place to the Janowyn people. With multiple options from hiking, kayak tours and cruises to discover this amazing and culturally significant place, you will be sure to leave with some amazing memories.

Between July and October, you can embark on a canoe tour of Katherine Gorge. A boat will take you along the first Gorge to the bank of the second gorge where you pick up either your double or single canoe (kids under 12 must ride with an adult). You can then go at your own pace through the following gorges admiring the rock art and the vastness of the sandstone escarpment towering above you. Swimming is permitted in the second gorge onwards and if you are keen enough you can make it to the 4th and 5th Gorges.

Perfect for families, Umbrawarra Gorge is found at the end of a 22km dirt road with a few creek crossings which makes the trip a little more exciting. This Gorge is easily accessible and breathtaking. Umbrawarra Gorge is perfect for swimming and is best visited early to mid dry season to ensure that the water is flowing. There is also a sacred Indigenous women’s site at the top of the cliffs, which only women are able to enter and find the rock art there.

2. Enjoy The Hot Springs

Bitter Springs is a natural spring in which you can take a leisurely float along the slowly flowing water with steps in and out at the end. The water at Bitter Springs is a comfortable 28-30 degrees year round and is a distinct clear blue colour which gives way to an amazing underwater world of plant and animal life. Make sure you bring a noodle for the kids.

Situated right in Katherine you will find a series of fresh water pools fed by a natural thermal spring. The pools start at the beginning of the spring and run into several pools down the hillside. These pools are on average 25-30 degrees year round and so inviting! You can float all the way from the top to the bottom pools.

3. Experience Daly Waters Pub

The original outback pub! Surely this iconic NT Pub needs no introduction but for those who do not know, The Daly Waters pub is home to the infamous Beef and Barra meal and some absolute cracking NT entertainment. The pub started collecting items from its visitors in the 80s, all thanks to a drinking competition. These items are now plastered all over the walls and ceilings and range from forgeign currency and photographs to underwear hanging from the rafters. You simply cannot just drive past Daly Waters.

4. Cutta Cutta Caves

The Cutta Cutta Caves are one of Australia’s only tropical limestone cave systems and is easily accessible by a boardwalk that runs throughout the cave system. The caves are full of spectacular stalactites and are also home to the rare ghost bat and the horseshoe bat. You have to book ahead and can only be seen via 1hour guided tours.

5. Immerse Yourself In Culture

This area is rich with Indigenous cultural experiences. From the sacred spots in the various national parks, to art galleries and museums, this ancient culture is certainly alive and well here.

The Top Didj Cultural Experience is a great activity for all to get hands on and spend 2.5 hours with the aboriginal artist Manuel Pamka. Immerse yourself in culture as Manuel teaches you how to create a Rarrk Painting of your own, tells you about his life and childhood growing up in the bush and participate in other culturally significant activities such as Spear throwing and Fire Lighting. You are guaranteed to leave with a smile and your own bit of artwork to boot.

6. Have An Outback Experience

Surrounded by some of Australia’s largest cattle properties, it’s no surprise that Katherine is an incredible place to get to know the outback way of life. Katherine Outback Experience runs from April to October a glimpse into life on the land with horse and dog demonstrations, Aussie music and funny outback tales.

The Top End is croc country and there is a number of options to see these magnificent beasts both in the wild and in captivity. The Jumping Crocodile Cruise and Adelaide River Queen are both awesome ways to experience crocodiles up close and personal. Tour guides encourage crocodiles to jump for tasty morsels only metres from spectators. Crocasourus Cove is a crocodile attraction right in the heart of the city and runs Australia’s only crocodile dive.

2. Chase Waterfalls

The Top End plays host to some of Australia’s most spectacular waterfalls. Litchfield National Park is home to Florence and Wangi Falls both breathtakingly beautiful and with refreshingly cool swimming holes year-round. Kakadu National Park boasts three spectacular falls; Jim Jim Falls, Twin Falls and Gunlom Falls. All three falls provide amazing photo opportunities and a place to cool off during those hot afternoons.

Tip: While swimming is generally ok in these areas, it’s important to always keep an eye out for crocodile signage. Don’t take crocodile warnings lightly! And DO NOT dive into waterholes. Many people still do this but without knowing depths and temperatures, it is really dangerous.

3. Explore Darwin’s History

Darwin has a rich history and it is evident wherever you go. From Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and rock art sites in Kakadu and Arnhem Land to evidence of the city’s involvement in WWII, exploring this region’s history makes for a great day out. 

Visit Darwin’s WWII gun turrets and memorabilia at the Darwin Military Museum. Discover exactly what happened when Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin with an exhibit at the Museum and Art Gallery of The NT. Or spend a pensive afternoon at the Adelaide River War Cemetery.

4. Do The Greater Litchfield Loop

This self-guided loop is a great option for travellers to see everything Litchfield has to offer without taking a tour. You can take 2-4 days on this trip exploring the swimming holes, waterfalls and typically NT sites. You’ll be able to venture to Florence Falls, Buley Rockhole and Wangi Falls (or head further into the park to discover more). You will head into Berry Springs Nature Park, and you’ll visit the famous termite mounds. On the final two days, you can opt to head to Dundee Beach and the Crab Claw Island Retreat (both amazing for fishing).

5. Go For A Swim

The Top End is not short of beautiful places to take a dip. The plunge pools in the National Parks are spectacular, but there are other areas to swim too. The Darwin Wave Pool, Darwin Recreational Lagoon, Leanyer Recreation Park, Lake Alexander and Darwin’s public swimming pools are good options. There are a few patrolled beaches in the region but crocodiles and stingers are present in these waters so the ocean doesn’t make for the safest swimming spot.

6. Experience Arnhem Land

It’s a little out the way of the usual tourist route around this area but if you visit Arnhem Land, you won’t be disappointed. With its beautiful coastlines, fishing galore and picturesque scenery, it’s a magical place! From incredible cultural experiences and historical sites to some of the most pristine beaches you’ll see, this region really feels like an exotic other world. You need a permit to visit so make sure you get one in advance.

7. Go Fish

The Top End is a fishing paradis.  The Top End’s coastline has a number of purpose-built boat ramps and fishing structures and there are amazing fishings spots everywhere. Darwin Harbour, Nighcliff Jetty, Channel Island Bridge and Dundee Beach are some locals favourites. The Top End is also famous for it’s million dollar Barra competition. Each year a number of barramundis are released into the waters off the coast of Darwin, each tagged with a dollar amount. If you’re lucky enough to catch one, you get the dollar amount on the tag… and 1 is tagged with $1million!

No experience to central Australia would be complete without visiting these two well-known outback icons. Along with learning the history and cultural significance of the area at the cultural centre, there are walks of various lengths and difficulties to appreciate these magnificent formations up close. Don’t miss a sunset and/or sunrise at either (preferably both); it is truly an unforgettable sight!

2. Explore The Macs

The MacDonnell Ranges are where you’ll see the naturally colourful gorges and picturesque waterholes so emblematic of Central Australia. They are a photographer’s dream and make a perfect spot for a picnic or to cool off on a hot day. Some of the more popular spots include Ellery Creek Big Hole, Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen Gorge. For the more adventurous, take the 4WD to Birthday Waterhole and Glen Annie Gorge or hike to Hugh Gorge.

4. Seeing an Outback night sky

Once the sun sets, you won’t believe how many stars you can see in a Red Centre night sky, along with the vibrant Milky Way. Sit back and relax as you count shooting stars and passing satellites or try to identify as many constellations as you can! Try The Astronomy Tour at Earth Sanctuary, or dinner under the stars at Tali Wiru or the Sounds of Silence.

5. Experience Indigenous Australia

Alice and surrounds is absolutely abundant with cultural experiences and ways to explore Australia’s rich Aboriginal history. Check out Tjanpi Desert Weavers, Albert Namatjira’s House, Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands Art Centre, Kathleen Buzzacott Art Studio or Araluen Arts Centre for a cultural experience. If you’re at Yulara, take the Tjukurpa cultural walks around Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

6. Hiking the Larapinta Trail

This 223km trail is quickly emerging as one of the “must do” trails in Australia. It is broken down into 12 sections and traverses the length of the West MacDonnell Ranges. The sections can be done individually and range from Grade 3 to Grade 5 and vary in distance, from 9.1km to 31.2km per section.

7. Step Back in Time

There are a number of historical sites and attractions to explore here. Check out the region’s telegraph history at The Telegraph Station and pioneer history at National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame, the National Road Transport Hall of Fame and the Central Australian Aviation Museum.

Arltunga Historical Reserve is also a must-do. It was founded in the late 1880s by gold miners and is considered one of the first major settlements in Central Australia. Take a walk through the various, well-maintained ruins and learn all about life at the settlement with the informative, self-guided walking tours.
